Redhawks volleyball team closes season with victory

The Southeast Missouri State volleyball team ended one of the worst seasons in program history with a road victory.

Southeast beat Tennessee Tech 25-19, 15-25, 27-25, 25-19 on Saturday after losing at Jacksonville State 25-13, 25-19, 23-25, 25-12 on Friday.

The Redhawks ended with a 7-22 overall record and a 4-14 Ohio Valley Conference mark as they finished tied for last in the 10-team league.

Southeast failed to make the six-team OVC tournament for the second straight year after never having missed the event since joining the conference in 1991.

Senior Emily Hughes led Southeast with 14 kills against Tennessee Tech. Freshman Emily Coon added 10 kills.

Freshman setter Julie Shives had a double-double with 43 assists and 20 digs.

Senior Kelly Benacka recorded 31 digs. Also reaching double figures in kills were senior Claire Keaton (17), senior Meagan Webb (10) and freshman Andrea Baylin (10).

Baylin had 12 kills against Jacksonville State. Shives notched a double-double with 30 assists and 10 digs.

Benacka had 17 digs and Keaton added 15.

Runners end year

The Southeast cross country teams ended their season Saturday at the NCAA Midwest Regional in Peoria, Ill.

Southeast's men placed 15th and the women were 27th.

Senior Jason Lumpkin led Southeast's men as he finished 77th with a time of 31 minutes, 56.39 seconds in the 10K.

Also for the Redhawks, junior Nate Shipley was 81st (32:01.07), followed by senior Dustin Davis (84, 32:05.53), senior Chris Loseman (97, 32.20.88) and sophomore Tyler Mullen (131, 33:05.19).

Senior Monical Noble was the top runner for Southeast's women, placing 146th with a time of 23:07.66 in the 6K.

Senior Kasey Owens was 162nd (23:34.87), followed by junior Liz Speicher (174, 24:07.61), sophomore Tiffany Mead (181, 24:58.30) and sophomore Christy Hazel (186, 25:37.95).
