The Southeast Missouri State soccer team, playing away from home for the first time this season, suffered a loss Friday.
Western Michigan beat the Redhawks 2-1 at the Panther Invitational in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Southeast fell to 3-2, while the Broncos improved to 1-2.
Bobbi Jo Schlick, a freshman from Jackson High School, scored her team-leading third goal of the season for the Redhawks.
Schlick's goal, off an assist by Ashley Runion early in the second half, tied the contest at 1-1. Western Michigan scored with about 10 minutes left for the winning tally.
Southeast was outshot 16-3 and Western Michigan held a 10-0 edge in corner kicks.
The Redhawks conclude tournament play Sunday with a noon game against Missouri-Kansas City.
Volleyball loses
The Southeast volleyball team lost to host Belmont 25-21, 25-19, 25-21 on Friday as the Belmont Invitational got underway in Nashville, Tenn.
Karlee Lursen had eight kills and 11 digs for the Redhawks (2-2). Emily Hughes also had eight kills.
Molly Davis and Amanda Rickhoff both notched 10 digs. Setter Sarah Barth recorded 23 assists.
Southeast concludes the tournament today with two matches, against Samford at 12:30 p.m. and Central Arkansas at 3:30 p.m.
All three of Southeast's tournament opponents posted at least 24 wins last year.
Runners fare well
Southeast cross country teams started the season off strong as they combined for three top-10 finishes at Friday's Saluki Early Bird Invitational in Carbondale, Ill.
On the men's side, Jason Lumpkin and Chris Loseman finished second and third, respectively, in the 6K run. Lumpkin turned in a time of 19:14.50, while Loseman finished in 19:19.90.
Tyler Mullen placed 11th (20:02.40), followed by Brandon Funderburk in 13th (20:21.50), Cody Martin in 17th (20:31.00), Devon Dudding in 18th (20:59.40) and Joel Krause in 19th (21:02.10).
The women were led by Szandra Pal. Competing in her first career cross country meet after four years on the Southeast basketball squad, Pal was 10th in the 4K race (15:17.70).
Also for the women, Monica Noble was 12th (15:25.50), Liz Speicher 14th (15:32.20), Kasey Owens 15th (15:48.00) and Central product Linnea Woldtvedt 16th (16:11.10).
