Southeast Missouri State's soccer team ended its regular season and celebrated senior night Friday by scoring two late goals to beat South Dakota State 2-0 at Houck Stadium.
The Redhawks (12-5-1) will carry a two-match winning streak into Tuesday's 7 p.m. home contest against Jacksonville State in the first round of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.
South Dakota State (4-12-1) made things tough on Southeast by keeping the Redhawks off the scoreboard for more than 86 minutes.
But, with just 3:38 remaining in regulation, Lisa Schweppe -- one of five Southeast seniors -- scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season on a free kick.
Schweppe has 19 career goals to rank third in school history. She is tied for third in career points with 51 and career assists with 13. She has played in 77 career games, tied for first, and her nine goals this year are tied for third on the school's single-season list.
Southeast freshman Casey Kraft tacked on an unassisted insurance goal just 36 seconds following Schweppe's tally. It was Craft's sixth goal of the second, tied for second-most on the squad.
For the second straight game, junior goalkeeper Lindsay Pickering was not required to make a save in recording her 10th shutout of the season. Southeast held a 16-2 edge in shots.
Volleyball falls at TSU
Southeast's volleyball team saw its four-match OVC winning streak come to an end Friday night with a narrow five-game loss at conference co-leader Tennessee State.
The Redhawks (11-14, 7-4 OVC) fell to the Tigers (18-8, 10-1) 32-30, 30-23, 28-30, 24-30, 15-13. No individual statistics were available.
Southeast plays at Austin Peay today.
Runners of the week
Southeast seniors Jen Caywood and Gabe Lutes have been named the OVC cross country runners of the week.
Caywood and Lutes both finished first in last Saturday's Southeast Invitational. For Caywood, it is her third OVC weekly honor this season.
Southeast's men and women will compete today at the OVC Championship in Charleston Ill.
