Southeast Missouri State senior Dustin Davis has received the Ohio Valley Conference's Scholar-Athlete Award for 2009-10. Davis, a track and cross country runner for the Redhawks, was on Thursday among six athletes bestowed the highest individual honor that can be earned by OVC student-athletes.
The award is given annually to three men and three women junior or senior student-athletes for their accomplishments in both the classroom and athletic arena, and because of their leadership qualities.
The six winners were selected from a group of 18 finalists by a vote of OVC Faculty Athletics Representatives.
Honorees must have performed athletically with distinction, earned at least a 3.25 grade point average and conducted themselves in a creditable manner. The award is based on the 2009-10 school year.
Davis is in his final season of eligibility with the Southeast cross country and track squads.
The Edwardsville, Ill., native capped his cross country career by finishing 13th and earning all-OVC second-team honors at Saturday's OVC meet.
Davis, who has served as the team captain for both the cross country and track squads, has a 3.90 grade point average in secondary education with a minor in sports management.
Davis has been both a Southeast Scholar-Athlete and OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll selection during his career. He has been active in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee as well as Project Charlie, a group that goes into elementary schools to help students with reading skills.
Southeast volleyball player Paige Dossey was one of the 18 finalists for the award.
