Redhawks run winning streak to 14 games

The Southeast Missouri State softball team continued its rampage Saturday.

Southeast swept a doubleheader at Tennessee State, 9-1 in six innings and 4-3, as the Redhawks extended their winning streak to 14 games.

Southeast (26-19, 15-8) pulled into a second-place tie with Morehead State in the Ohio Valley Conference entering today's series finale against TSU, which ends the regular season.

If the Redhawks and Eagles finish tied for second, Southeast earns the tie-breaker and gains a first-round bye for next week's six-team OVC tournament.

Freshman ace Giana Zimmerman, a leading candidate for OVC freshman of the year honors, notched her ninth straight win in the opener as she recorded her 19th complete game in 23 starts.

Zimmerman (16-8) allowed just one hit and an unearned run. She struck out 12 and walked one.

Sophomore Whitney Dupuis (7-7) was the second-game winner as she continued her recent strong pitching. Dupuis worked five innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs. She struck out two and walked one.

Zimmerman earned her first collegiate save with two perfect innings.

Southeast had 17 hits in the twin bill, led by junior left fielder Jennifer Vasquez. She went 4-for-8 with two triples, a double and four RBIs.

Sophomore shortstop Nicole Troncoso and freshman third baseman Renee Kertz both had three hits for the Redhawks.
