Although the season doesn't begin for more than a month, Southeast Missouri State women's gymnastics fans can get a sneak preview of their squad on Tuesday.

The Redhawks will hold their annual intrasquad "Meet the Team Night" at 5 p.m. at Parker Gym. There is no admission charge.

"We'll split our team up and it will be run just like a regular meet, with officials," Southeast coach Tom Farden said. "I think it's a good way for our fans to come out and get an early look at our athletes.

"After the competition is done, fans are welcome to stick around and talk to everybody, get to know our athletes, including our eight freshmen."

Farden said the Redhawks have been in voluntary conditioning since August and have been training for gymnastics since September.

"They've been working really hard, and I know they're looking forward to this intrasquad meet," he said.

Southeast begins the season Jan. 14 at Kentucky. The Redhawks' first home meet will be Jan. 27 against Winona State.

The Redhawks return several key performers from last year's team that achieved its highest national ranking since the 1999 season, at No. 35.

Tennis signs player

Southeast women's tennis coach Jay Pacelli has announced the signing of a player for the upcoming spring season.

Julia De Oliveira Masotti hails from Sao Paulo, Brazil, where she was ranked in the top 30 nationally for the 18-and-under age group. She will join the Redhawks when the second semester begins in January.

"I am very excited bringing a talent like Julia into our program," Pacelli said. "She is an accomplished tournament player in singles and doubles who has a strong all-around game.

"In addition, Julia has an incredible work ethic and is very fit. I expect her to play a major role in the success of our program in 2006."
