The Southeast Missouri State football team's fourth-quarter comeback attempt fell short in the Redhawks final game of the season on Saturday.
The Redhawks lost to Jacksonville State 42-32 on the road to end the season 3-9 overall and 2-6 in Ohio Valley Conference play.
Southeast outscored Jacksonville State 21-0 in the fourth quarter and got the ball back trailing by eight points with two minutes, 26 seconds left in the game.
The Redhawks marched down to the Jacksonville State 24-yard line before three incomplete passes left them facing fourth and 10. Quarterback Kyle Snyder completed a pass to Peter Lloyd for nine yards to turn the ball over on downs with just a second left on the clock.
Running back DeMichael Jackson scored from 32 yards out on Southeast's first play of the fourth quarter.
Snyder, who did not start and split time with Scott Lathrop, scored his second touchdown of the day later in the quarter on a 4-yard run and Ron Coleman capped the scoring on a 1-yard run after Eriq Moore intercepted a pass and returned it 72 yards to the Jacksonville State 4-yard line with 8:28 left in the game.
Although it ended with a missed field goal, Jacksonville State ran just enough time off on its ensuing possession. The Gamecocks moved took 5:15 off the clock during a nine-play, 44-yard drive.
Southeast finished with 410 yards rushing in the game. Jackson, a sophomore, finished with 183 yards and two touchdowns, making it the fourth consecutive game he finished with more than 100 yards. Fellow sophomore running back Lewis Washington finished with 111 yards.
Southeast passed for just 53 yards. Lathrop was 5 for 8 for 28 yards with one interception while Snyder completed two of his six passes for 25 yards.
The Gamecocks (9-3, 5-3) ran for 440 yards and threw for 147 in the contest. DaMarcus James gained 206 yards on the ground and had three touchdowns.
The Redhawks trailed 21-6 after one quarter and 28-6 at halftime before falling behind 35-13 at one point in the third quarter.
Tim Hamm-Bey led Southeast's defense with eight tackles. Ron Davis and Moore both had seven.
