Boston Red Sox ace Curt Schilling was officially placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a bone bruise on his surgically repaired right ankle.
The move was made retroactive to Sunday, the day after Schilling allowed six runs over seven innings in a 6-5 loss to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Boston announced Wednesday that Schilling would miss at least two weeks.
Schilling, 38, is 1-2 with a 7.13 ERA in three starts this season. He began the season on the disabled list and missed the first seven games of the season.
Boston called up right-handed reliever Tim Bausher from Class AAA Pawtucket.
The Red Sox are already without pitcher David Wells, who went on the disabled list Tuesday with a sprained right foot and is expected to miss at least a month. Starter Bronson Arroyo also stands to miss a start after his six-game suspension on Friday for throwing at batters Sunday against the Devil Rays.
Injured Los Angeles closer Eric Gagne was suspended for two games and fined an undisclosed amount Friday for violating a penalty by Major League Baseball barring him from Dodgers games during his stint on the disabled list.
Gagne had been disciplined for his ejection on April 6. During the fifth inning of the Dodgers' game at San Francisco, he apparently heckled home plate umpire Bill Hohn about balls and strikes from the dugout, breaking rule 3.17 of the MLB rulebook, which states that "players on the disabled list ... may not take part in any activity during the game such as warming up a pitcher, bench jockeying, etc."
Gagne's suspension will begin after he is activated from the disabled list.
Devil Rays manager Lou Piniella and Red Sox manager Terry Francona were suspended three games apiece Friday for their roles in two bench-clearing scuffles last weekend.
Boston's 11-3 victory Sunday featured six ejections and two beanballs.
Boston pitcher Bronson Arroyo suspended six games. Tampa Bay pitchers Dewon Brazelton and Lance Carter were each suspended five games, and Boston outfielder Trot Nixon was suspended for two games.
