Record day puts Green in Senior Players lead

DEARBORN, Mich. -- Hubert Green tied the course record with a 9-under 63 Friday and took a three-stroke lead after the second round of the Senior Players Championship at the TPC of Michigan.

Hale Irwin, who began the day with a two-stroke lead after setting nine-hole and first-round records, shot a 1-over 73 and fell into a three-way tie for second with Howard Twitty and Mike McCullough, who both shot 68, at 7-under 137.

Jay Sigel, Stewart Ginn, Mark McCumber and Tom Jenkins, who won the Canadian Senior Open last week, were four strokes behind Green.

Green has just two top-10 finishes this year and has been tied for 37th, 41st and 52nd in three of the his last four tournaments. He has three victories on the Senior PGA Tour, his last two coming in 2000, and didn't finish better than a tie for fifth last year.

PGA: Kirk Triplett shot a 7-under 64 for a career-best 36-hole total of 130 and was tied for the lead of the Greater Milwaukee Open with first-round leader Tommy Armour III and Jeff Sluman, who won the GMO in 1998.

Sluman shot a 66 Friday, while Armour had a 67.

Steve Lowery (65) was one shot behind the leaders and Chad Campbell (66), Robert Damron (63), Dan Forsman (63) and Bo Van Pelt (68) were another stroke back.

LPGA: Laura Diaz made four birdie putts of at least 12 feet in a 7-under 64 that gave her a two-stroke after two rounds of the Jamie Farr Kroger Classic near Sylvania, Ohio.

The round was the lowest of Diaz's four-year professional career.

Her 8-under 134 total was two strokes better than rookies Beth Bauer and Jeanne-Marie Busuttil and veteran Kris Tschetter.

Tschetter, winless in the last decade on the LPGA Tour, tied for fifth at the Farr last year, her best finish since undergoing hip surgery in 2000.

Karrie Webb shot a 65 and Kelli Kuehne had a 66 to share fifth place at 5-under 137.

Defending champion Se Ri Pak -- who has won the Farr three of the last four years -- bounced back from a 72 with a 67.

PGA EUROPE: Sweden's Fredrik Jacobson shot a 6-under 65 and held a four-stroke lead after two rounds of the Scottish Open at Luss, Scotland.

Jacobson had eight birdies, including five straight starting at No. 5, for a two-round total of 11-under 131.

Former Masters and British Open champion Sandy Lyle followed an opening 67 with a 3-under 68.

Justin Rose (71), Miles Tinnicliff (70), Richard S. Johnson (65) and Carl Pettersson (66) were all at 6-under.
