ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Rams will retire the No. 75 worn by Hall of Fame defensive end Deacon Jones during the team's home opener Sept. 27.
The Rams host Green Bay in the first regular season home game for the 2009 season. The team earlier had announced plans to retire the number but didn't announce when until Tuesday.
Jones coined the term "sack" and had 173 1/2 for his career, including 21 during the 1967 season. He was the NFL defensive player of the year in 1967 and 1968 and was voted to the Pro Bowl nine times.
Jones was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1980.
