Ramirez leads Red Sox to 9-4 win over Royals

DETROIT -- Manny Ramirez had a career-high five hits, including a go-ahead double in a five-run eighth capped by Trot Nixon's grand slam, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 9-4 Tuesday to stop a four-game losing streak.

Boston, which had matched its longest skid this season, came back from a 4-0 deficit and took a 5-4 lead on Ramirez's RBI double in the eighth. Ramirez was 5-for-6 with three RBIs, three runs and three singles.

John Burkett (9-3) gave up four runs and six hits in six innings and has won consecutive decisions for the first time since May 29 and June 4. Jeff Farnsworth (2-2) gave up five runs and five hits in 1 1-3 innings for Detroit, which had won four of five.

Orioles 6, Mariners 1

BALTIMORE -- Scott Erickson (4-9) pitched a six-hitter and struck out seven for his first victory in 13 starts since April 28, and Marty Cordova homered and drove in three runs as Baltimore completed a two-game sweep.

Joel Pineiro (10-4), who had won six straight starts, allowed six runs and six hits in six innings.

Gary Matthews Jr. also homered for the Orioles. Mike Cameron had three hits, including a homer, and stole two bases for the Mariners.

Angels 4, Twins 2

MINNEAPOLIS -- Garret Anderson hit a two-run homer to help Jarrod Washburn (11-2) win his 11th straight decision -- the longest streak in the major leagues this year. Washburn allowed two runs and seven hits in six innings.

Troy Glaus drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth against Eric Milton (11-7) as Anaheim ended a three-game losing streak. Milton gave up three runs and four hits in six innings.

Cristian Guzman had three hits and homered for the second straight game for the Twins.

Athletics 2, Devil Rays 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- Mark Mulder won for the ninth time in 10 starts and Jermaine Dye homered as Oakland beat Tampa Bay.

The Athletics are 8-1 against the Devil Rays this season. Tampa Bay has dropped 11 of 12 overall.

Mulder (11-5) gave up one run and six hits in 7 1-3 innings. Over his last 10 outings, he has allowed only 16 earned in 72 1-3 innings.

Dye went 3-for-4 and came within a triple of hitting for the cycle. Randy Winn had four of Tampa Bay's eight hits.

Rookie Jorge Sosa (0-2) allowed two runs and six hits over six innings. He struck out three and walked three in his fourth career start. White Sox 5, Indians 4

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Magglio Ordonez's second homer of the game, a leadoff shot in the ninth inning off Bob Wickman, gave Chicago a win over grieving Cleveland.

Ordonez, who also hit a two-run homer in the first, connected for his 17th off Wickman (0-3) as the White Sox won for just the second time in six games and capped a dark day for Cleveland.

The Indians played with heavy hearts after learning of longtime trainer Jim Warfield's death less than two hours before gametime Tuesday.

Warfield, who joined the Indians' organization in 1969, suffered a massive brain hemorrhage on Monday at the ballpark and died at 5:15 p.m., less than two hours before game time.

Ellis Burks homered and had four RBIs for the Indians.

Yankees 7, Blue Jays 6

TORONTO (AP) -- Nick Johnson hit a tiebreaking homer in the ninth inning and New York beat Toronto.

Johnson led off with his 12th home run against Cliff Politte (1-3).

Mariano Rivera pitched a perfect ninth for his 23rd save and first since giving up six runs at Cleveland on Sunday.

Jason Giambi's three-run homer capped a five-run seventh inning for the Yankees, who rallied from a 4-1 deficit.

Jeff Weaver, making his second start for New York since being acquired from Detroit on July 5, allowed four runs and nine hits in six innings. He struck out nine and walked two.

Royals 6, Rangers 5, 11 innings

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Brent Mayne led off the 11th inning with his first home run in more than a year, giving Kansas City a win over Texas.

The Royals won their season-high fifth straight game. Texas was swept in the three-game series and dropped its fourth in a row overall.

Rafael Palmeiro hit his 470th career homer and Herbert Perry also connected as Texas set a team record by homering in its 19th straight game.

The Royals tied it in the ninth on Carlos Beltran's RBI triple with two outs. Rangers reliever Danny Kolb, activated from the disabled list before the game, was trying for his first major league save.

Mayne homered into the water display beyond the right-center field for his first shot since July 8, 2001. He connected on the first pitch from Juan Alvarez (0-1).
