Rain washes away finale of series against EIU

Southeast Missouri State hoped to salvage something from its three-game Ohio Valley Conference baseball series against Eastern Illinois.

The Redhawks never got the chance as Sunday's series finale at Capaha Field was rained out. It will not be made up, per OVC rules.

Southeast and EIU waited out a two-hour delay before the coaches and umpires agreed at 3 p.m. that the field was unplayable following steady rain that had increased by the time the contest was finally called off.

"It's unfortunate, but there's not much you can do about it," Southeast coach Mark Hogan said. "The big thing is the safety of the players. With all the rain we've gotten in the past several days, and then the rain that hit us today, it was just too much."

The squads were fortunate to get in Saturday's doubleheader, since the forecast called for a strong chance of rain throughout the day.

EIU claimed a pair of 8-7 victories to establish a firm grip on the OVC lead.

The Panthers, ranked 24th nationally by Ping Baseball, are 34-10 overall and 12-3 in the OVC.

Southeast is 25-18 and 11-6. The Redhawks are three games behind the Panthers in the loss column with six league contests remaining for both sides.

"They've got a great club, but both games could have gone either way," Hogan said.

Southeast, second in the nine-team OVC, returns to action Saturday with a doubleheader at Eastern Kentucky that begins a three-game conference series.

Freshman wins track title

Southeast freshman Shemieka Brewer won the triple jump Saturday at the OVC outdoor track and field meet in Richmond, Ky.

Brewer, the OVC indoor freshman of the year who had been hampered by injury during the outdoor season, had a distance of 38 feet, 5 inches.

Brewer's result was inadvertently omitted from the story of the OVC meet that appeared in Sunday's Southeast Missourian.
