Pujols homers in Cardinals' victory

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Albert Pujols certainly appears to be ready for the regular season. The same can't be said of Atlanta closer John Smoltz.

Pujols homered and got robbed of two hits, and the St. Louis Cardinals rallied against Smoltz to beat the Braves 6-4 Sunday.

Pujols flied to deep center in his first at-bat, then hammered a fastball from starter Jaret Wright off a sign beside the scoreboard in the fourth to tie the score at 1-1. The homer, the second of the spring for Pujols, went about 450 feet.

He went 1-for-3, dropping his spring training average to .368.

Pujols later hit a one-hopper up the middle that Wright stopped with his pitching hand.

St. Louis starter Jason Marquis pitched four solid innings, allowing one run on five hits and striking out five.

Noteworthy

The Cardinals acquired infielder Tony Womack from Boston for pitcher Matt Duff. Womack, who had reconstructive surgery on his throwing elbow in October, will report to Jupiter, Fla., today for an evaluation by the St. Louis doctors.
