Poplar Bluff ends Central's season

After defeating Poplar Bluff in a tight three-set match in the final week of the season, Central's volleyball team could not duplicate that feat on Monday, falling 25-16, 25-11 to the Mules in the opening round of the Class 4 District 1 tournament at Hillsboro.

The fourth-seeded Mules will face No. 1 Farmington tonight in a semifinal match.

Kristin Shirrell led the Tigers with seven digs and five assists. Kyla Valleroy added five digs, and Carissa Wheeler had three kills.

Central ended one of its most successful seasons in recent memory with a 10-18-1 mark.

"I'm optimistic about the future," Tigers coach Maile Gannon said. "There's no doubt we'll have a better season next year."

No. 3 Jackson topped No. 6 Sikeston 25-16, 25-13 in another quarterfinal game.

Jodie Gipson had five aces and three kills, Amanda Peiffer had seven kills and Lucy Hartmann added six kills for the Indians (23-10).

Jackson will take on the winner of the Hillsboro-North County game in the semifinal round today at 6:30 p.m.

Class 3 District 1

Third-seeded Notre Dame knocked off No. 6 Doniphan 25-13, 25-11 in the opening round of the Class 3 District 1 tournament.

Ashley Nenninger had eight kills, Claire Goodson had four kills and Meridith Medlin and Kaitlyn Scheeter had three kills apiece for the Bulldogs (14-12-3). Medlin added 10 assists.

Notre Dame will meet second-seeded host Dexter today at 6 p.m. in the semifinal round.

Perryville, the No. 4 seed, edged past New Madrid County 27-25, 19-25, 30-28. Perryville will face No. 1 Kennett at 5 p.m. tonight in the semifinals.

Class 2 District 2

Top-seeded Scott City swept fourth-seeded Twin Rivers 25-18, 25-11, at the Class 2 District 2 tournament in Bloomfield to advance to tonight's district championship match.

Kacie Ritter had 10 kills, Amanda Braun had five kills and Lindsey Amick added 19 assists for the Rams (24-7-2).

Scott City will take on No. 2 Bloomfield in the championship match at 6:30 p.m.

Class 1 District 3

The top seeds all advanced at the Class 1 District 3 tournament at Meadow Heights.

Second-seeded Meadow Heights, No. 3 Zalma and No. 4 Oak Ridge all won quarterfinal matches. Top-seed Leopold will face Oak Ridge tonight in a semifinal, while Meadow Heights will play Zalma in the other semifinal.

Oak Ridge edged No. 5 Saxony Lutheran 25-22, 26-24.

Kara Versemann had eight points for the Crusaders (4-22), while Stacey Manche and Nicole Petzoldt each had five points.

Class 1 District 2

Once again the finals of the Class 1 District 2 tournament will come down to Bell City and Advance.

The top two seeds cruised through semifinal matches Monday at Bell City.

Bell City, the top seed, beat No. 4 Oran 25-19, 25-19 in one semifinal. Second-seeded Advance topped No. 3 Bernie 25-16, 25-19 in the other semifinal.

Angela Broshuis and Stephania Jordan had four kills apiece for Advance (16-12-2), and Alicia Reaves added eight assists.

Oran had defeated No. 5 Risco 25-23, 25-22 in the quarterfinal round before falling to Bell City. Cassie Graviett had six kills and Carmen Duncan had four kills for Oran (9-18-2) against Risco, and Duncan added 13 digs and five kills against Bell City.

BOYS SOCCER

Jackson 2, Farmington 1

Jackson fell behind 1-0 at halftime but scored twice in the second half to end its regular season with a home win.

Cameron Keller and Chris Crossett scored for the Indians (10-9-2), and Keller and Brian Davidson had assists.

JV -- Jackson won 3-0

OTHER EVENTS

Central's junior high girls basketball team defeated Sikeston 40-4 at the Dexter tournament. Katherine Blasiney had 16 points to lead the Tigers (3-1).
