Poole's final win lifts Central in opener

Central's wrestling team opened the season in thrilling fashion Tuesday night by rallying for a 36-32 win over host Murphysboro, Ill.

The Tigers trailed 32-30 entering the final match at 215 pounds (the dual meet started with the heavyweight match, then went from 103 on up).

Central 215-pounder Jason Poole came through with a pin of Mark French, giving the Tigers six points and the victory.

"Murphysboro has always been tough, and it feels good to get a win," Central coach Josh Crowell said. "I'm really proud of the kids."

Also winning for the Tigers were Chris Griffith (103), Matthew Latham (119), Dan Coonce (135), J.D. Mungle (160) and John Moseby (189) -- all by pin except for Latham's forfeit victory. That helped offset Murphysboro's eight wins, only one of which came by pin.

"We had some younger guys who, even though they didn't win, avoided being pinned, which saved us points and was huge," Crowell said.

Central also won three of five junior varsity matches, but no team score was kept.

Oran Tournament

Fifth-seeded Scott County Central rounded out the semifinal field by beating fourth-seeded Kelly 82-73 in the tournament's final first-round game that served as the season openers for both squads.

Chris Pullen led the Braves with 19 points, Chris Monroe had 16, Jeremy Johnson 14, Andrew Pullen 12 and Josh Boley 10.

The Hawks' Kendall Deason scored 22 of his 24 points in the second half. Chris Romas had 18 and Trey Simmons 14.

In a consolation semifinal, seventh-seeded Richland eliminated host Oran 63-55. Cody Smith led the Rebels with 18 points. Garrett Roslen paced the Eagles (0-2) with 22 points, Matt Seyer had 12 and Trevor Irwin added 10.

Woodland Tournament

Delta handed rookie head coach Shawn Kinder his first victory at his alma mater as the sixth-seeded Bobcats surprised third-seeded Meadow Heights 84-74 in the tournament's final first-round game.

The Bobcats, playing their season opener, jumped out to a 21-4 first-quarter lead and never looked back. Kevin Bartels led the way with 20 points, Aaron Kinder and Brent Menz both had 19, and Zack Kelley added 14.

Meadow Heights (1-1) got 24 points from Heath Fulton, 18 from Brad Adams, 15 from Terry Wagner and 14 from Anthony Bollinger.

"We jumped on them early and kind of held on," Shawn Kinder said. "It was kind of a surprise, I guess."

In a consolation semifinal, fifth-seeded Woodland bounced back from a loss to eliminate eighth-seeded Zalma 58-55.

Chad Hulvey led the Cardinals (1-1) with 18 points, Cody McCraw had 14 and Anthony Grojean added 12. The Bulldogs (0-2) got 15 points from Tim Landing, 14 from David Hovis and 13 from Curt Wiseman.

Alex Heddle had Central's lone victory as the Tigers fell to 0-2 in dual meets with a road loss.

Heddle won the 100 freestyle. He was also second in the 50 freestyle and swam on Central's medley relay and 400 freestyle relay teams that placed second.

The Tigers have their first home meet Friday against Parkway South at 4 p.m.

Central's junior varsity boys basketball team beat Notre Dame 58-46 in the Perryville JV Tournament. Jared Thomas scored 15 points and Dave Edwards had 13. Abe Dirnberger led Notre Dame with 19. Central, 2-0 in the tournament, plays in the finals at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Central's eighth-grade boys improved to 3-0 by beating host Charleston 55-37. Ty Williams scored 17 points and Ryan Willen added 10.
