The Perryville football team took another crack at getting its first win Friday night, which was no small feat considering Dexter already had clinched the Class 3 District 1 title and was ready to pay back the Pirates for a 41-37 triple-overtime decision in the district winner-take-all game last year.

"Nobody gave us a chance to win the game or even be in the game," Perryville coach Rick Chastain sad.

Nonetheless, the Pirates locked the Bearcats in a scoreless battle before Dexter's Alex Becker scored on a 1-yard touchdown run with 8 minutes, 3 seconds to play.

Becker finished with 129 yards rushing, and Dexter compiled 293 yards. The Bearcats fumbled three times in the game.

"Defensively, we played really well," Chastain said. "Dexter is big and strong but our guys played well and clamped down on them."

Perryville bounced back from a 21-20 overtime loss to a more beatable opponent, Kennett, which they lost when the Indians faked a point-after kick and ran in a two-point conversion.

"I think this shows they're ready to get bigger, stronger and faster for next year," Chastain said. "It's hard to say you're happy when you're 0-10, but I was proud of the kids tonight."

Perryville ended the night with minus-13 yards rushing, and only 77 yards passing on a 9-of-26 effort from Ryan Schilling. But Ryan Regelsperger pulled in seven catches for 42 yards.

Unofficially, Regeslperger, a senior, finished with 32 catches for an area-best 409 yards.

"He's a fine, fine player," Chastain said. "I enjoyed watching him play, and I enjoyed calling his number because I knew he would make the catch."
