PERRYVILLE -- Perryville High's boys basketball team broke a 30-year-old school record Tuesday night with its 13th consecutive victory, a 72-64 triumph over visiting Festus.

Scott Kassel scored 28 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to help the Pirates break the win record which had stood since the 1965-66 season.

Bruce Weinkein, Matt Meyr and Steve Tsikhakis each scored 11 points.

"(The record) is something the kids have wanted very much," said Perryville coach Rick Francis. "It's been something they've been counting up to game after game. It's important to set goals within the season."

Perryville took a 18-13 lead into the second quarter and extended its advantage to 42-32 by intermission. The Pirates took a 56-45 lead into the fourth quarter and held off the Tigers.

Weinkein added 10 rebounds for Perryville, which returns to action Saturday at home against Chester (Ill.).

St. Vincent 83

Crystal City 75, OT

PERRYVILLE -- St. Vincent overcame 33 points by Crystal City's Nathan Riney to defeat the visiting Hornets in overtime in Jefferson County Conference action Tuesday night.

St. Vincent countered Riney with 23 points by Jonathan Wengert, 22 by Chad Winkler and 19 points by Jason Cissell.

Riney hit a shot with seven seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime tied 69-69.

St. Vincent never trailed in the extra session, outscoring Crystal City 14-6 and hitting 8 of 10 free throws.

"That was a big win," said St. Vincent coach Bruce Valleroy. "Crystal City will probably be the top seed in our district. It's a big win to finally win a close one."

St. Vincent (3-9, 1-3) has lost eight game by less than 10 points.

St. Vincent will host Fredericktown on Thursday in a make-up game.

Delta 77

Zalma 57

ZALMA -- Delta kept Zalma in search of its first win of the season with a comfortable victory Tuesday night.

Sammy Below tallied 15 points to lead the Bobcat charge. Jeremiah Cook and Terry Koch both added 12 points as Delta improved to 8-5.

Terry Hendrix scored a game-high 23 points for Zalma (0-9).

Delta built a double-figure lead, 24-13, in the first quarter and extended its advantage each period.

Scott-Mississippi tourney

DELTA -- The favorites both prevailed Tuesday night as opening-round play continued in the Scott-Mississippi County Conference Tournament.

Second-seeded Kelly beat No. 7 Oak Ridge 78-58 and fourth-seeded Scott County Central downed No. 5 Oran 80-59.

First-round play will conclude tonight as No. 3 Delta takes on No. 6 Chaffee at 7. The semifinals will be played Thursday night, with the finals set for Friday.

Kelly (9-6) got 16 points from Nathan Dirnberger, 13 from Ben Klipfel and 10 apiece from Jeff McNiell, Michael Riley and Jason Glastetter.

Oak Ridge was led by Kirt Ruehling's 26 points. Matt Pruesser had 12.

Scott Central (9-4) was paced by Marcus Blissett with 20 points. John Fort followed with 18, Eric Canady had 14 and Demetris Williams 12.

Oran got 15 points from Justin Wiermann, 13 from Travis Bickings and 13 from Justin McAlister.

Jackson 51

Poplar Bluff 27

JACKSON -- Jackson improved to 5-0 in dual matches Tuesday night, but not without a challenge from visiting Poplar Bluff.

On the mat, Jackson won six matches while Poplar Bluff won five. But the Indians received three forfeits, which padded their victory margin.

"Poplar Bluff has a real good team," said Jackson coach Steve Wachter. "I thought they wrestled real well. This is probably one of the best teams I've seen them have in a while."

Jackson's JV prevailed 58-15.

Boys swimming

Oakville 115, Central 68

ST. LOUIS -- Cape Central ran into an improved Oakville swim team and saw the host emerge from the pool with a comfortable victory.

The Tigers (6-6) were held to just three victories.

Eric Yount won the 100 freestyle in 53.67 while Matt Younghouse touched the wall first in the 200 freestyle, winning in 1:55.24. Both swimmers were on the victorious 400 freestyle relay team, which also included Ben Chisman and Ben Roeger.

"We've always been able beat them, but that was by far their best team," said Central coach Dana Powell. "We swam well, but they just have a better team than we do."

Central will host four consecutive meets, beginning with a 4:30 p.m. meet Thursday against Country Day.

JUNIOR HIGH BASKETBALL

Central freshmen prevail

Cape Girardeau Central's ninth-graders opened their own eight-team tournament Tuesday night by edging Notre Dame 47-44.

Ross Conner had 12 points and Donnie McClinton added 10 for Central, which will play New Madrid at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the semifinals. New Madrid beat Meridian Tuesday.

Action will resume Thursday night as Jackson plays Charleston at 6 and Sikeston meets Poplar Bluff at 7:30.

Central eighth grade falls

Cape Central's eighth-graders were not as fortunate as the freshmen as they opened their four-team tournament Tuesday night by losing to Jackson 47-40.

Patrick McComas had 20 points for Jackson while T.J. Erlacker scored 10 for Central.

Also Tuesday, Poplar Bluff defeated Sikeston. Poplar Bluff will play Jackson at 7:15 tonight for the championship while Central will meet Sikeston at 6 for third place.
