STE. GENEVIEVE -- Richie Phillips put on a dominating pitching performance as the McDowell Capahas notched a 3-1 baseball victory over host Ste. Genevieve Wednesday night.
Phillips struck out 14, walked one and allowed just two hits and an unearned run in six innings.
Then Lanson DeBrock came on and earned a well-deserved save by allowing just one hit over the final three innings. He fanned three and did not issue a walk.
"It was a really good ballgame," said Capahas manager Jess Bolen. "Richie was just outstanding and Lanson came in and did a really good job. Ste. Genevieve's pitcher also threw very well. They've really improved their team."
The Capahas, now 8-4 on the season, had eight hits, two by both Steve Kress and Mike Miller.
McDowell broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the sixth inning. After Ste. Genevieve got its only run in the bottom of the sixth, the Capahas came back with one in the eighth.
The Capahas will return to action tonight when they travel to Murphysboro, Ill., for a 7:30 contest. Saturday, the Capahas will host Fairview Heights, Ill., in a noon doubleheader.
Also, there are still a few openings for the first annual McDowell Capahas Golf Tournament that will be played Friday at Bent Creek Golf Course in Jackson.
