JACKSON -- Perryville's girls soccer team is certainly making a big splash in their first-ever district tournament.

The third-seeded Lady Pirates got an overtime goal from Stacey Baer to knock off second-seed and tourney host Jackson 1-0 in the late game Thursday. In its first season to field a girls soccer team, Perryville (12-6) will meet defending district champion Cape Central (19-0-1) for the District 1 title Saturday at 11 a.m.

The Lady Tigers discarded fifth-seed St. Pius 3-0 in the first semifinal.

Neither squad showed much offense in the late game until Perryville's April Watts slipped a pass to Baer for a break-away late in the first overtime. Baer moved within a few yards of the goal and angled the ball inside the far post for the victory.

"This was our best game of the season," said Perryville coach Dwayne Hadler. "The girls played with everything they had, like it was their last game. I'm very proud of way we're playing."

The disappointing loss will keep Jackson (14-5-1) out of the district championship game for the first time since the tournament started three years ago.

"We played well enough to win; it was just one of those games," said Jackson coach Bonnie Knowlan. "We did all we could do, but we just didn't score.

"This is really hard for the (seven) seniors. We had a good year."

Central rolled into its second championship game, despite a rain delay of about 10 minutes in the first half.

Kim Aslinger scored a goal and added an assist. Amber Voerg dished two assists, one coming on Jennifer Daume's second-half goal. Lorie Bittle scored the Lady Tigers' other goal.

Amy Harris recorded her 15th shutout in goal.

"We played real well," said Central coach Tom Doyle. "We showed a good ball-control game"

Perryville will be looking for its first win against Central in four tries during Saturday's final.
