Valle 28, Fredericktown 27

FREDERICKTOWN -- Valle rallied from a 27-6 third-quarter deficit to maintain its mastery over Fredericktown, edging the Black Cats Friday night in Mineral Area Activities Association play.

Valle (3-2), which hasn't lost to Fredericktown (1-4) since 1979, scored the only two touchdowns of the fourth quarter, the latter coming with 1:20 left in the game.

"When you get somebody down 27-6 you ought to beat them," said Fredericktown coach Kent Gibbs. "We didn't do what we needed to do."

The Black Cats thrived on big plays as all four of its touchdowns were at least 40-yard scoring plays.

Derek Smith opened the scoring in the first quarter by hauling in a 56-yard pass from quarterback Luke McKinnis. McKinnis hooked up with Rusty Leonard for a 40-yard scoring pass in the second quarter and the Black Cats led 13-6 at the half.

Fredericktown opened the third quarter scoring with a 41-yard pass from McKinnis to Scott Stevens. Jeremy Penwell then scored on a 57-yard scamper for a 27-6 lead.

Penwell finished with 135 yards on 19 carries. Fredericktown had 360 yards offense overall.
