Brooklyn Moll is coming off an incredibly successful 2023 season in goal for the Perryville Pirates.

She has picked up where she left off this season as she helped lead the Pirates to a 3-2 beginning.

The Pirates opened the season at the Fox Invitational where they fell 1-0 to Notre Dame St. Louis and fell 4-0 to Windsor (Imperial) before beating Bishop DuBorg 6-0 for their first win of the season.

“It tells us what we need to work on,” Moll said of playing competition from St. Louis. “I think it humbles us a little bit. I think defensively we did the best we could.”

Moll proved a season ago that she was one of the top goalkeepers in the area as in 20 games, she allowed just 16 goals and posted 14 shutouts in the process.

“I was really excited coming into this season,” Moll said. “We lost a bunch of seniors so I think we were all nervous to see how we were going to do but for me, I was excited.”

On Monday, the Pirates defeated Cape Central 2-1 and Moll made six saves, coming up with some timely ones to preserve the lead.

“It’s exciting, especially when the crowd goes crazy,” Moll said. “It gives me a bit of a pump and then I’m ready for the rest.”

In terms of positioning, Moll is rarely not where she needs to be, something that can be difficult to do consistently.

“I just always have my eyes on the ball at all times,” Moll said. “I’ll always look back to make sure I know where I am and to be sure I’m not off-center or anything.”

During Monday’s win, Perryville’s attack afforded them countless opportunities, which resulted in a lot of time with no action for Moll.

“I try to stay vocal,” Moll said. “That way I don’t let myself doze off or something. Staying vocal really helps me keep focused.”

Perhaps the main reason Moll has had so much success is because of the back line in front of her.

“They are amazing,” Moll said. “They definitely make it much easier for me. I wouldn’t be where I am without them. I wouldn’t want any other backs. They’ve helped me out a lot.”

Riding a three-game win streak, the Pirates welcome conference foe St. Pius X to town at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3.

“We can’t settle with this win,” Moll said after Monday’s win over Cape Central. “We have to keep pushing forward. St. Pius on Wednesday will be a tough one.”
