Perryville loses, but improves from last week

Friday's result for Perryville was the same as the previous week -- a loss. But how the Pirates played the game could not have been much different.

Coming off a 20-0 loss to Park Hills Central on Oct. 2 that Perryville coach Rick Chastain called disappointing, the Pirates lost 28-27 to Potosi on Friday night.

"I felt good about the way we bounced back this week," Chastain said. "We started a lot of young kids and I was proud of them. We established the running game. Our linemen this week decided they'd make a difference and they did."

Senior Matt Unterreiner rushed for 158 yards on 18 carries and scored a touchdown on a 65-yard run.

Sophomore Travis Brown -- one of three youngsters who impressed Chastain -- had 27 yards on seven carries and scored a touchdown. Junior fullback Seth Ezell and junior linebacker Blake Dannemueller, who made 11 tackles in his first start, also boosted Perryville (1-5).

Quarterback Cory Buerck ran for one touchdown and passed for another, to Bryan Regelsperger. Buerck finished 3 of 10 for 73 yards.

Potosi improved to 4-2 although quarterback Earl Haug was limited to 6 of 16 passing and one touchdown.

"The defense did a pretty good job this week," Chastain said.

"Last week we were at the bottom and we knew there was only one way to go, and we regrouped," Chastain said. "I was proud of the way we played."

Schaefer tops 200 again

Scott City senior running back Matt Schaefer topped 200 yards for the third straight week and scored four touchdowns Friday night in the Rams' 42-12 victory against Fredericktown.

Schaefer finished the night with 207 yards on 22 carries.

Scott City quarterback Mark Johnston completed 6 of 6 passes for 99 yards and two touchdowns.

Luke McClellan caught three passes for 66 yards and a touchdown. Jonathan Barr caught the other TD pass.

The Rams (6-0, 4-0) host Hayti (2-3, 2-1) on Friday night in a SEMO Southern Division battle.
