It's doubtful that many teams will enter the season with more experience than Perryville's girls.

The Pirates return all five starters and their first player off the bench -- along with several other reserves -- from last year's 16-10 squad that led top-seeded Dexter late before the Bearcats pulled away to win the Class 4 District 1 final.

No wonder coach Vicki Lohmann is looking for big things from the Pirates.

"We definitely have high expectations, and I don't have to motivate them too much because the taste from not winning that final game is still there," Lohmann said. "We have so much leadership from that senior class."

Perryville's all-senior starting unit is led by guards Krista Miesner and Amber Hacker, who averaged 15.8 and 14.7 points per game, respectively, last season.

Miesner and Hacker, entering their fourth season as starters, were both all-conference and all-region selections a year ago.

Forward Annette Weibrchet was Perryville's third-leading scorer last season, at nearly 10 points a game.

Senior guard Meghan Roth was Perryville's top reserve last year, while the Pirates also bring up several key players from a successful junior varsity team, including leading scorer Kendra Schilli and leading rebounder Kim Miesner.

"We didn't have a lot of bench last year, but we've got so much more depth with a lot of talent from the JV level," Lohmann said. "We don't have a lot of height, but I think we can be very good."
