BENTON -- Perryville won two of the four races held Saturday at the Kelly Cross Country Invitational.

Pirate runners finished 1-2 in the varsity 5,000-meter run as the Pirates accumulated only 28 points to easily outdistance runner-up Kelly (60), Poplar Bluff (62) and Notre Dame (81).

Perryville also won the JV boys race.

Kelly's girls won the three-team varsity girls race with 33 points. Poplar Bluff (34) was second and Notre Dame (61) third.

In the boys' varsity race, Nathan Moore of Perryville finished first in 17:14 while teammate Jacob Schneider (17:34) was right behind. Perryville's score was completed by James Boice (8th, 18:07), Tyson Rellergert (9th, 18:08) and Brian Schlichting (14th, 18:37).

Notre Dame's top finisher was Rick Smith (17:40). He was followed by Adam Eftink (18th, 19:06), Matt Frey (19th, 19:08), Jason Peters (25th, 20:19) and Jaime Higgins (26th, 20:39).

Kelly's top five finishers: Ashley Hahn (6th, 17:52), Adam Lofton (18:18), Adam Daughetee (12th, 18:26), Lance Scheffer (20th, 19:30) and Brandon Middleton (22nd, 20:06).

In the girls varsity race, Gina Buerck of Perryville won in 21:12 to edge runner-up Susan Judd (21:35) of Notre Dame by 13 seconds.

Kelly's finishers: Laura Ruff (5th, 22:34), Jenny Riley (7th, 23:17), Shannon Lawson (9th, 23:31), Megan Nelson (10th, 23:38) and Melissa Garner (12th, 23:43).

Notre Dame's other top finishers: Jean Stoverink (14th, 23:59), laura Mittrucker (19th, 25:18), Jill Eichhorn (22nd, 26:34) and Amanda Gosche (24th, 27:24).

Perryville runners finished 1-2-3 in the JV boys race, led by Tim Chitwood (19:09). Jen Brotherton of Perryville won the JV girls race in 24:15.

Central girls place foruth

ST. LOUIS -- Cape Central's varsity girls cross country team took fourth Saturday and the boys varsity took sixth in the 16-team meet at Northwest of House Springs.

Jackson's varsity girls took sixth, while the boys took 10th.

Placing among the top 30 and earning varsity medals for Central on the 2.9-mile course were Mark Stone (sixth, 16:09), Justin Hawkins (21st, 16:42), Gabe Austin (28th, 16:48) and Kim Pancoast (sixth, 19:56).

Jackson's varsity medalists were Julie Wunderlich (seventh, 19:56) and Carol Koenig (27th, 21:08).

Also for Cape Central's boys, Ross Tilghman finished 40th with a time of 17:29 and Morgan Maki rounded out the Tigers' top five with a 48th-place finish in 17:42.

For the Lady Tigers, Rachel Sprigg took 32nd in 21:22, Lori Bittle finished 36th in 21:41, Amanda Hutteger was 42nd in 22:13 and Katie Hawkins finished 48th in 22:43.

Here are Jackson's top five finishers among the boys: Josh Minson (39th, 17:26), Zach Friedrich (54th, 18:01), Michael Burk (60th, 18:17), Doug Dixon (67th, 18:46) and Jeremiah Keller (74th, 19:11).

Rounding out the Lady Indian's top five were: Laura Unverferth (34th, 21:28), Amanda Lowes (53rd, 23:13) and Jennifer Watkins (60th, 23:32).

Both teams had success at the freshman and junior varsity levels, where the top 20 received medals.

For Jackson, freshmen Lee Strickard took 13th and James Fortner took 17th on the boys side, while Sarah Jaskowski took 15th and Heather Sanders took 16th for the girls.

Cape Central had four junior varsity runners earn medals. They were: Casey Brennan (seventh), Jean Maguire (10th), Elizabeth Meyr (19th) and Bethany Hicks (16:54).

Mike Gerber took 18th and Tyler Metzger finished 19th to lead Central's freshman boys team, while Whitney Pingel took first and Alisa Uzoaru took 11th for the freshman girls.

Soccer

Central splits pair

Cape Central placed seventh in the eight-team Francis Howell Soccer Tournament.

After dropping its opener to Francis Howell on Friday, Central fell 4-1 to Notre Dame of Quincy (Ill.) before defeating Washington 3-0.

Matt Kennard scored the lone goal against Notre Dame off an assist from Whit Linn.

Against Washington, Cape Central (4-4) jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead on goals by Paul Miller and Mick Metzger. Miller scored unassisted while Metzger deposited a Chris Cole pass. Cole concluded the scoring in the first minute of the second half by netting a pass from Metzger.

Notre Dame 3, SLUH Juniors 0

Timmy Buerck scored the only goal Notre Dame would need in the first half as the Bulldogs blanked St. Louis University High's Junior squad.

Buerck scored at the 30-minute mark off a feed from Chris Dirnberger. Shane Kistner upped the advantage to 2-0 two minutes into the second half with the assist going to Adam Obermiller. Seven minutes later Obermiller netted a pass from Timmy Wencewicz to conclude the scoring.

Michael Gosche made several big saves in net to record the shutout.

"He was tested more today than he had all year and he came up big for us," said Notre Dame coach Brad Wittenborn, who saw his team improve to 5-1.

TENNIS

Cape Central Quad

Cape Central and Jackson tied for first in the Cape Central Quad with both teams going 2-0 in matches against Oakville and Rockwood Summitt.

The Lady Tigers blanked both opponents by 9-0 scores.

Jackson defeated Rockwood 9-0 and Oakville 6-2.

SOFTBALL

Jackson splits four games

in Seckman Tournament

ARNOLD -- The Jackson Lady Indians softball team won two and lost two Saturday in the Seckman Tournament.

Jackson opened the tournament in fine style, posting a 10-0 win over Kirkwood.

Beth Becker picked up the win in that game, allowing just three hits.

Lindsey Meyr went 4-for-4 with three stolen bases, while Megan Kuntze -- who had a double, two RBIs and three steals -- and Cherish Tillman each went 2-for-3.

Jackson dropped its second game of the tournament 3-0 to Oakville.

Tillman, who went 6-for-12 on the day, went 2-for-3 against Oakville. Gretchen King was the losing pitcher, allowing three earned runs on 10 hits.

In their third game on Saturday, the Lady Indians committed three errors which led to three unearned runs as Jackson fell 3-2 to Nerinx Hall.

Jackson (8-6) left 10 runners on base as Becker took the tough loss. She gave up four hits and fanned three.

Meyr -- who was 6-for-14 Saturday -- went 2-for-4 as did Heide Jansen.

In its final game, Jackson downed Pacific 4-0.

King picked up the win on a four-hitter. She struck out three.

Bollinger provided a two-run homer.

Jackson JV finishes third

Jackson defeated Cape Central 15-6 in the third-place game of the Jackson JV Invitational.

Jackson finished the tournament with a 3-1 mark while Central ended 2-2. The Lady Tigers are 11-3 on the season.
