Panthers pounce on another victim

PATTON, Mo. -- The Meadow Heights boys basketball team, which went 4-18 last year, is off to a 5-1 start after winning a 97-82 shootout from Delta.

The Panthers, who scored more than 20 points in all four quarters, were paced by Josh Mayfield with 25 points and Joey Bell with 21. Also in double figures were Chris Burr (13), Joe Jordan (11) and Cody Smith (10).

Bell had five 3-pointers and Mayfield added four as the Panthers connected on 11 shots from beyond the arc.

Delta received 25 points from both Lance Kinder and Craig Bock. Joey Keys added 10.

"We're playing real well and we're shooting the ball well," said Meadow Heights coach Tom Brown. "I thought Delta played a good game. It was a good game to watch."

PERRYVILLE 60, FREDERICKTOWN 42

FREDERICKTOWN, Mo. -- After scoring just 15 points in the first half, Perryville broke loose with 45 points after halftime to put away Fredericktown.

Despite a sluggish first half, Perryville (4-1) took a 15-12 lead into the third quarter, where it outscored the Blackcats 19-8 to take control.

Chad Ozark scored all of his game-high 16 points after the intermission for the Pirates. Andrew Meyr added 12 points, eight of which came in the second half.

Nathan Huckaba led Fredericktown with 10 points.

Perryville played without its point guard Jon Miesner, who injured a knee in the Pirates' last game. The severity of the injury is not yet known.

ST. VINCENT 60, NORTH COUNTY 55

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- St. Vincent, playing just its second game of the season, remained undefeated by rallying past North County.

The Indians, ahead 33-32 at halftime, fell behind 48-40 after three quarters but they outscored the Raiders 20-7 in the final period.

Tyler Wengert led a balanced St. Vincent attack with 15 points, Adam Bockman had 13, Wes Richardet added 11 and Matt Wengert finished with 10. Matt Wengert also pulled down 12 rebounds.

Richardet and Tyler Wengert combined for 18 of St. Vincent's 20 fourth-quarter points, with Richardet scoring 10.

"It was a good game," said St. Vincent coach Bruce Valleroy. "We finally took the lead for good with about four minutes left and then held on."

BELL CITY 72, LEOPOLD 57

BELL CITY, Mo. -- The Cubs (5-2) had four players score in double digits to cruise past struggling Leopold.

Trailing 18-14 after the first period, Bell City outscored the Wildcats 40-18 in the second and third quarters.

C.J. Hadley led the Cubs with 18 points, while Dominitrix Johnson, Eric Henry and Kenyon Wright added 15, 14 and 11, respectively.

Scott VanGennip paced Leopold with 25 points, including five 3-pointers.

ORAN 72, EAST PRAIRIE 41

EAST PRAIRIE, Mo. -- Nathan Seyer pumped in 28 points to lead Oran to an easy victory.

Oran (4-1), which also got 15 points from Ryne Wood, led 28-14 at halftime and broke the game wide open with an 18-8 third-quarter edge.

Justin Poley scored 14 points for East Prairie (2-4).

MALDEN 62, SCOTT CITY 43

SCOTT CITY, Mo. -- Scott City continued to struggle as the Rams fell to 0-3.

Malden's Colen Robinson led all scorers with 25 points. Tyler Ward was Scott City's high scorer with nine points.

The Rams, who trailed 24-17 at halftime, committed 27 turnovers.

OAK RIDGE 60, ZALMA 54

ZALMA, Mo. -- Oak Ridge withstood a mild last-quarter Zalma rally to keep the Bulldogs winless at 0-5.

Jeff Cowan scored 23 points and Clayton Ruesler added 21 for the Blue Jays.

Chad Wiseman and Brad McKlin shared scoring honors for Zalma with 10 apiece.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

WOODLAND 41, EAST PRAIRIE 23

MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- Playing their fourth game in five days, the Lady Cardinals were able to knock off East Prairie.

Woodland (4-2) got 18 points from Kandice Abner and 10 from Alisa Lehmann.

NEW SALEM BAPTIST 39, TWIN CITY 31

FESTUS, Mo. -- New Salem of Marble Hill, Mo., improved to 2-1 with a win over the Eagles.

Sarah Green led New Salem with 18 points, while Jennifer Meek added 11. Bethany Johnson pulled down seven rebounds.

Jackson JV Tournament

JACKSON, Mo. -- Notre Dame and one of Jackson's two squads picked up wins in the four-team round-robin event.

Notre Dame beat Jackson '1' 42-40 in overtime. Amanda Dirnberger scored 11 points for Notre Dame and Marie Oehl had 11 for Jackson.

Jackson '2' routed Perryville 46-11 as Jamie Goodpasture and Kelly Loos each scored 10 points.

The tourney will continue tonight and conclude Saturday.

BOYS SWIMMING

JOHN BURROUGHS 108, NOTRE DAME 68

ST. LOUIS -- Notre Dame won five events but didn't have as much depth as John Burroughs as the Bulldogs fell to 2-1 in dual meets.

The Bulldogs had a pair of double winners in John Fisher (100 freestyle, 200 freestyle) and Jordan Kuper (100 breaststroke, 200 IM). Notre Dame's other first place was by Mark Lester (500 freestyle).

Notre Dame and Cape Central will have a dual meet Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Central Pool.

Cape Central's 8th grade boys lost to Charleston 50-29 Monday despite 13 points by Kingsley Ehie.

Central's 'B' team prevailed 55-40 as Anthony Hempstead scored 12 points.
