Panthers' Kennedy no-hits SCC

Junior Cody Kennedy struck out 14 batters and didn't allow a hit as Meadow Heights blanked Scott County Central on Thursday.

The only baserunners to reach against Kennedy were on a walk and an error in the 13-0 win.

Kennedy picked off the runner that reached on the walk for his eighth pickoff of the season.

Kennedy also went 3-for-4 at the plate, including two doubles.

The Meadow Heights offense stroked 18 hits as the Panthers improved to 4-4.

Notre Dame 10, Kelly 9

Notre Dame struck first when pitcher Dylan Drury hit a long two-run shot over the right-field wall to give the Bulldogs the advantage.

The Hawks got on the board in the top of the second when Drury walked Zach Essner with the bases loaded.

Notre Dame shortstop Colton Young answered in the second with a two-run double, bringing the tally to 4-1 in favor of the Bulldogs.

Kelly (6-6) crept closer when Dustin Crowden's long flyball clanged off the wall for a run-scoring double. Josh DeBrock drove him home with a single.

"If you paid to get into this game, you didn't pay enough," Kelly coach Nate Wills said of the slugfest, which featured six home runs.

Kelly pitcher Ryan Essner had a solid bottom of the third, holding Notre Dame in check.

The Hawks took their first lead in the fifth. Ethan Lee put down a sacrifice bunt to advance Brett Harper and Zach Essner, but an errant throw scored Harper. When Crowden hit a deep sacrifice fly two batters later, Kelly was on top 5-4.

Things were quiet for a time, until Notre Dame's Coby Holland entered the game in the fifth and hit the first pitch he saw over the left-field wall to tie the score at 5-5.

Notre Dame went up 8-5, but the Hawks answered with a power surge in the sixth. Lee, Crowden and Felter all hit solo home runs in the course of 10 pitches, evening the score at 8-8.

Notre Dame retook the lead when Holland scored on a wild pitch. The Bulldogs extended the edge to two runs when Ryan Bass singled home Jeremy Essner.

Notre Dame coach Jeff Graviett sent in Brandon Peters to pick up the save in the seventh. He responded by striking out two, but Kelly's Lee hit another solo home run to cut the deficit to 10-9.

"It was a tremendous game," Graviett said. "We had this type of game last year, 12-11. We knew one thing going into today -- that Kelly would swing the bats. They brought all their great hitters back from last year.

"We expected a battle today and we got one. It was hard-fought and one of those you hate to see anybody lose."
