Otahkians softball team earns split

Thanks to Amy Fahnestock's no-hitter and a 14-hit attack, Southeast Missouri State University's softball team was able to salvage a split of Wednesday's Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader with visiting Austin Peay.

After dropping the opener 5-2, Southeast romped 8-0 in six innings. The Otahkians are 10-22 overall and 5-2 in OVC play. The Govs are 13-24 and 3-7.

Victoria Torrez had three hits in the finale, giving her four on the day. Suzi Lair also had three second-game hits and four total.

In the opener, Austin Peay had just five hits but scored four unearned runs. Jessica Hunter was the loser despite allowing two hits and no earned runs in 5 1/3 innings. The Otahkians had four hits.

Football signs Schwent

Ste. Genevieve High School senior Adam Schwent, who rushed for nearly 3,000 yards last season, signed a letter of intent with Southeast's football program Wednesday afternoon.

Schwent, a 5-foot-11, 190-pound tailback, led the Dragons to the Class 3 state championship game but he suffered a serious knee injury on the opening kickoff and did not play the rest of the way during Ste. Genevieve's loss.

"We're really excited to sign Adam," Southeast coach Tim Billings said. "We feel like he'll do really well in our program."

Billings said Schwent, whose injury required surgery, should be 100 percent by the time fall practice begins in August.

Tennis ends season

Southeast's tennis team finished the season with a pair of 7-0 losses this week, falling to visiting Eastern Illinois Sunday and host Tennessee-Martin Monday.

The Otahkians ended their first year under coach Jay Pacelli with a 1-21 overall record and a 1-7 Ohio Valley Conference mark.

"This was the finish of a challenging and tough first year," Pacelli said. "This team will be a player in the OVC before very long. I'm a stubborn coach who believes that a terrific tennis team can and will be built here at Southeast. We have work to do and I can't wait to get started."
