ORAN, Mo. — Oran baseball left nothing to chance, delivering a near-flawless performance that resulted in a 10-0 win over Charleston at Oran High School on Wednesday, May 3.

Led by their star pitcher Kolten Payne, the Class 1, No. 2 ranked Eagles (11-4) controlled the game from the start until it was called due to the run rule in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Payne earned the win after starting and throwing the first two innings. He didn’t give up any runs on two hits with six strikeouts and no walks.

Parker Bryant pitched the final three innings. He also didn’t allow any runs on one hit with six strikeouts and one walked batter.

Oran gained a 1-0 advantage after Nic Massey scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second inning and added a nine-run inning to extend the lead to 10-0 in the bottom of the fifth.

The Bluejays (7-12) also suffered a 6-3 defeat to the Scott City Rams (14-8) at Hillhouse Park on Tuesday, May 2.

“It was a good high school baseball game,” said Charleston coach Michael Minner. “We just got beat. Our guys competed and we had a chance. Bryant Gunn was good on the mound, and we made most of the plays. We did some good baseball things but we just have to keep working. Hopefully, we can close a game out like this in the playoff. We know we can compete.”

The game was marred by Charleston’s costly errors while Scott City played a clean game.

The Bluejays led 1-0 after Owen Willis singled to score Bryant Gunn in the bottom of the second inning. Charleston increased the lead to 2-0 when Lane Morrow stole home base.
