The way Kenton Parmley seemed to be lining shots all over the field every game, I thought he just might reach the NCAA Division I record hitting streak of 58 consecutive contests by Robin Ventura.
But Parmley's 47-game hitting streak finally ended last weekend when he went 0 for 3 against Tennessee Tech.
It was still an incredible accomplishment for Southeast Missouri State's senior shortstop, who set the school and Ohio Valley Conference record while matching the third-longest streak ever in Division I.
Two other dazzling streaks by Southeast players are still in the works.
All-American senior third baseman Trenton Moses from Advance High School has reached base safely in a school-record 65 straight games. Unfortunately neither the OVC nor NCAA keeps a record for that category.
Sophomore left fielder Derek Gibson has a 29-game hitting streak. If he keeps it up, he'll go into next season perhaps threatening to attain the heights Parmley reached. Now that would be something.
Gibson's story is a neat one.
The graduate of North County High School in Bonne Terre, Mo., came to Southeast as a quarterback in 2009. He joined the Southeast baseball program in 2010 and redshirted, working in some practices around his football responsibilities.
Gibson then decided to quit football after two years. He never played in a game but did earn a championship ring as a member of the Redhawks' 2010 squad that captured the first OVC title and made the first playoff appearance in program history.
Gibson received one at-bat last season as a redshirt freshman. He played sparingly early this year before breaking into the lineup. He's stayed there ever since and has developed into one of the Redhawks' top hitters.

Southeast men's basketball coach Dickey Nutt told me he expects forward Nino Johnson and guard Telvin Wilkerson to remain in the program, although nothing is official until the fall semester begins.
There has been speculation on Internet message boards that the two touted freshmen from the 2011-12 campaign were considering transferring.
Nutt seems confident that won't be the case, which would be good news for the Redhawks because both Johnson and Wilkerson have the potential to be impact players.

While offensive lineman Dan Connolly (Patroits), offensive lineman Eugene Amano (Titans) and linebacker Edgar Jones (Ravens) are in the NFL, four other Southeast products have found homes in football's minor leagues.
Running back Henry Harris, wide receiver Walter Peoples, linebacker Justin Woodlief and tight end Kyle Hubert are playing abroad as part of the European American Football League.
Harris, Woodlief and Hubert were members of Southeast's 2010 OVC championship and playoff team. Harris is playing for the Bolzano Giants in Italy, Woodlief is with the Allgau Comets in Germany, and Hubert is with the Caimans Le Mans in France.
Peoples, who completed his eligibility at Southeast in 2009, plays for Italy's Bologna Warriors. His younger brother, Tyler, is a quarterback with the Redhawks.

Speaking of Jones, it was great to see him Saturday at Houck Stadium during Southeast's spring intrasquad game.
Jones, who completed his eligibility with the Redhawks in 2006, talked to Southeast players as a group in their locker room immediately following the contest.

One final Southeast football observation after Saturday's spring game that concluded the Redhawks' spring drills.
I expect transfer quarterback Kyle Snyder to be a solid replacement for record-setting Matt Scheible, and I wouldn't be surprised if Snyder turns into something special over the next three years.

The Southeast track and field program will get to compete in its most important meet of the season on home turf.
Southeast will host the OVC outdoor championships at the Abe Stuber Complex on Friday and Saturday.

If you've completed your American Legion eligibility and want to play some baseball this summer -- and you've got considerable talent -- the Plaza Tire Capahas will hold tryouts at 1 p.m. Sunday at Capaha Field.
It should be noted that players still involved in their college seasons do not have to attend. There will be an additional tryout for those players at a later date.
