MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- The scorebook says Corvin Schoen scored four points. But what the scorebook doesn't say speaks volumes.

Schoen, a senior forward, was a key contributor defensively for Oak Ridge on Friday night as the Blue Jays downed Perryville 61-50 in the third-place game of the Woodland Invitational Basketball Tournament.

Schoen harrassed, hounded and generally made life miserable for Perryville's Colin Schirmer throughout the night. Even though Schirmer, the Pirates' 6-foot-6 junior center, scored a game-high 17 points, he was held to just seven in the first half as Oak Ridge built a 31-17 halftime lead.

"I told [Schoen], 'I thought you played as well defensively against Shirmer better than almost anybody all week long,'" Oak Ridge coach Adam Stoneking said. "I thought he just a fantastic job of eliminating the touches.

"He's by far and away their most lethal offensive weapon, so if he can't touch it, they're going to have a hard time scoring."

The Blue Jays (2-1), meanwhile, were firing on all cylinders, hitting 9 of 17 field goals in the first quarter to open a 21-9 lead. Even though Perryville (1-2) played them even the rest of the way, the Pirates couldn't dig out of their first-quarter hole.

"We were down 12 points at the end of the first quarter and we end up losing by 11," Perryville coach Justin Dreyer said. "If we could get out of the gates a little bit better, that's a different ballgame."

Oak Ridge junior center Ryan Below matched Schirmer with 17 points. Junior guard Kelby Brown added 14 and senior guard Hunter Seyer had 13.

Grant Dix added 14 for Perryville.
