Notre Dame's 10-run fifth inning clinches win against Dexter

Notre Dame's baseball team broke a deadlock and enacted the 10-run rule all in the same inning as the Bulldogs defeated visiting Dexter 15-5 in five innings on Thursday.

After Dexter scored four runs in the top of the fourth to tie the game 5-5, Notre Dame pushed across 10 runs in the fifth inning. Pinch-hitter Tony Longman, the 13th batter in the inning, ended the game with a one-out RBI single.

The hit was the seventh of the inning for Notre Dame (5-3, 4-1 SEMO Conference), which was also issued two walks and had a hit batsman in the uprising. Dexter (5-1), which suffered its first loss, also committed two errors in the inning.

The outburst made a winner of reliever Lee Essner, who allowed one hit over the final 1 2-3 innings. Essner relieved starter Jeff Brosey in the fourth inning.

Kyle Diveley went 4-for-4 in Notre Dame's 12-hit attack. Blake Urhahn, who had a triple, and Essner both went 2-for-3.

With the game tied 1-1, Notre Dame scored four runs in the second inning.

Notre Dame won the junior-varsity game 7-0 behind the no-hit pitching of Jeremy Brinkmeyer.

Oak Ridge Tournament

Woodland's Alex VanGennip struck out 14 batters in a 13-4, five-inning win over Zalma in the opening round of the Oak Ridge Tournament.

Woodland (4-3) pounded out 16 hits to Zalma's four. Travis Benfield led the way for the Cardinals with a 4-for-4 day. Benfield had three RBIs, a triple and a two-run home run. VanGennip, Kent McCormick, Luke Johnson, Scott Crader, Josh Foster and Chris Huffman had two hits apiece for Woodland.

Meadow Heights (1-3) advanced by scoring seven runs in the first inning and using a five-run third to coast to a 12-1 victory over host Oak Ridge.

Derik Collier, who got the win for Meadow Heights, helped his own cause by going 3-for-3. Josh Vandeven went 3-for-3 for the Panthers, including a double.

Meadow Heights will face Leopold at 4 p.m. today. Woodland will face today's St. Vincent-Delta winner at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

Puxico 5, Leopold 4

Ryan Smith of Puxico rang up 17 strikeouts before being relieved in the eighth, but Leopold couldn't take advantage of the pitching change and fell a run short on the road.

Clayton Jansen went 2-for-3 for Leopold (2-2). Josh Van de Ven, Michael Vandeven, and A.J. Sieler all had doubles for the Wildcats.

Advance 9, Holcomb 6

Eric O'Hare was the winning pitcher and had a three- run home run to help Advance (5-1) defeat Holcomb (1-2).

Jacob Daniel added a double for Advance, and Justin Gibson went 3-for-4.

Chaffee 14, Scott County Central 1

Chaffee used a barrage of hits to ease past Scott County Central in four innings at home.

Brandon Davis, James Reischman and Sam Burnett each had a double for Chaffee (5-4). Davis led the way with three hits. Burnett, Zac Horman and Robert Coomer added two hits apiece.

Burnett picked up the win, allowing just one hit and striking out five.

SOFTBALL

Oak Ridge Tournament

Oak Ridge cruised past Meadow Heights 20-1 in its first-round tournament game at home.

Oak Ridge (2-1) took a 12-0 lead in the first inning and won in three innings. Laura Glueck struck out five on the mound and went 3-for-3 with a double.

Oran used the mercy rule to get past Charleston 16-0 in another first-round game. Teresa Hodges was the winning pitcher, while teammate Danielle Klipfel had a double.

Oak Ridge will face Delta at 5:30 p.m. today, while Oran will face today's Scott City-Woodland winner at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

Bell City 13, Dexter 7

Emily Burch struck out 11 and pitched a complete game for Bell City in a home win.

Burch went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs. Amy Green was 4-for-4 for the Cubs (1-2), and Katie Niemczyk had three hits and three RBIs.

Chaffee 17, Scott County Central 0

Whitney Horrell pitched her second no-hitter as Chaffee won in three innings.

Chaffee (3-1) jumped out with 13 runs in the first inning. Mallory Kiefer, Brandie Sneider and Brittany Bennett had three hits apiece, and Casey Guzman had two.

GIRLS SOCCER

Central 1, Poplar Bluff 0

Heidi Pilsner scored at the 22-minute mark of the first half on an assist from Kate Miller for Central's winning goal on the road.

The Tigers improved to 5-4 in time for today's tournament game in Springfield, Mo.

Central's JV defeated Poplar Bluff 6-0.

Jackson 3, St. Vincent 0

Molly Hartmann had two goals and an assist to lead Jackson.

Whitney Dietly netted the other goal for Jackson (6-1) and Emily Curtis, Elizabeth Nussbaum and Molly Hartman had assists.

Whitney Werner recorded the shutout.

In JV, Jackson won 1-0.

GOLF

Central wins triangular

Cape Girardeau Central improved to 7-0 with a triangular victory at New Madrid Country Club.

The Tigers posted a 161 total to win easily over Caruthersville (185) and New Madrid County Central (187).

Central's Todd Obergoenner, Tyson Seabaugh and Ty Gramling all shot 40s to tie for medalist honors with Caruthersville's Drew Barrett. Paul York shot a 41 to round out Central's scoring.

BOYS TENNIS

Sikeston 5, Central 4

Central dropped below .500 with a loss at home.

Adam Baron and Kevin Rohatgi had Central's only singles wins. Heath Orr came up just short in the No. 1 singles match, falling 9-8. Orr and Will Ramsey won their doubles match, and the team of P.D. Stuart-Rohatgi also won for Central.
