Notre Dame pounds out 16-5 win

BENTON, Mo. -- Notre Dame continued its strong start to the baseball season by pounding Kelly 16-5 Monday. The game was stopped after six innings by the run rule.

The Bulldogs are 7-1 overall and 5-1 in the SEMO Conference. Kelly fell to 3-5.

Sophomore Blake Urhahn, making his second varsity start, pitched five innings for the victory, allowing four hits and four runs while striking out 10 and walking five.

Notre Dame pounded out 14 hits, led by Dustin Klipfel with three. He also drove in three runs and scored three runs. Kyle Diveley had two hits and three RBIs while Shane Kistner added two hits.

Chaffee 8, Portageville 7

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Chaffee scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally past error-prone Portageville.

The Bulldogs' fifth error of the game proved fatal when a pickoff throw to third got away with two outs and allowed Josh Lamer to score the winning run. Lamer was safe on a close play at the plate.

Portageville (7-3) led 6-3 after two innings, but Chaffee (6-4) tied the game on a three-run homer by starting pitcher Chase Eskew in the fifth. Portageville moved ahead 7-6 with a run off winning picher Zac Horman in the seventh.

Brent Thomasson went 4-for-4 for the Devils while Eskew and Robert Coomer had two hits apiece.

Oak Ridge 7, St. Vincent 4

OAK RIDGE, Mo.-- St. Vincent committed four errors and Oak Ridge managed seven runs without getting a base hit to drive home any of those runs as the Bluejays (2-3) beat the defending Class 1A state champion.

Clayton Ruesler was the winning pitcher while Jeff Cowan had two hits, scored three runs and stole two bases. Ben Ponder had the team's only two RBIs on groundouts.

Bell City 9, East Prairie 3

East Prairie, MO.-- AFTER ALLOWING TWO RUNS IN THE FIRST INNING, DARRELL BAILEY SETTLED DOWN AND PITCHED THE CUBS (4-3) TO VICTORY.

BEN DUNCAN HAD THREE HITS AND THREE RBIS FOR BELL CITY WHILE JASON RAMPLEY ADDED TWO RBIS.

LEOPOLD 12, M. HEIGHTS 3

LEOPOLD, Mo. -- Leopold (2-3) won its second straight behind Josh Van de Ven's complete-game five-hitter.

Scott VanGennip, Kevin Holzum and Brandon Bueter led Leopold with two hits each, while Josh Fulton went 3-for-3 for Meadow Heights.

SOFTBALL

Chaffee 15, Portageville 0

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Abby Walter tossed a no-hitter in a four-inning run-rule win for Chaffee (6-1).

The Red Devils' offense clicked for 12 hits, with Samantha Hendrix and Walter accounting for three hits and three RBIs apiece.

Kelly 15, Oak Ridge 0

OAK RIDGE, Mo. -- Dana Essner pitched a three-hit shutout to keep Kelly (7-0) undefeated.

Essner struck out 11 and walked none in the four-inning run-rule win over Oak Ridge (2-3-1).

Monica Senciboy, Kelly Essner and Cara Scherer led Kelly with two hits each.

Leopold 13, M. Heights 3

LEOPOLD, Mo. -- Lori Vandermierden homered, doubled and had three RBIs as Leopold (4-0) remained undefeated with a six-inning, run-rule victory over Meadow Heights (0-4).

Holly Jansen also had two hits while Melinda Trankle was the winning pitcher.

GIRLS' SOCCER

St. Pius 2, Notre Dame 1

St. Pius scored just before the end of the first sudden-death overtime period to knock off the Bulldogs (4-2-1).

Amanda Dirnberger scored early in the game, on an assist from Kristen Boos, as Notre Dame took a 1-0 halftime lead. St. Pius tied it early in the second half.

St. Pius won the JV game 1-0.

St. Vincent 7, Hillsboro 1

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- Caitlin Hoeh scored three goals and Jessica Berhle had two as the Squaws (2-6-1) romped.

Joy Donze and Chelsey Brown also had goals. Kindle Ernst distributed three assists, Amanda Carron had two while Hoeh and Stacey Brown each added one.

St. Vincent's JV won 2-0 behind goals from Donze and Brown.

TRACK & FIELD

Scott City Invitational

SCOTT CITY, Mo. -- Kelly captured the team title in the boys' division while Scott City ran away with the girls' championship.

Scott City's all-stater Loren Groves swept the four events she entered. Groves won the 100- and 300-meter hurdles, the shot put and the discus.

Jennifer Vandeven of Chaffee, a state qualifier in 2001, was also a quadruple winner. She took the 100-, 200-, and 400-meter dashes and anchored the winning 400 relay team.

On the boys' side, Kelly sophomore Tyson Glaser won the pole vault and the triple jump.

GOLF

Caruthersville Invitational

DYERSBERG, Tenn. -- Poplar Bluff won the 13-team Caruthersville Invitational at The Farms Country Club.

Medalist Ben Brumitt led the Mules to a 306 team total with a 1-over-par 73. Jackson had two teams in the competition and placed second (318) and third (323), respectively. Central (324) took fourth and Notre Dame (362) placed eighth.

GIRLS' SWIMMING

Visitation 120, N. Dame 63

ST. LOUIS -- Lindsay Kuper won the 200 freestyle and Jessica Duscharme claimed diving for Notre Dame (2-8).
