Notre Dame improves to perfect 10-0

The Notre Dame High softball team continued its sizzling start as the Lady Bulldogs destroyed visiting Sikeston 16-1 Monday afternoon. The game was stopped in the bottom of the fourth inning by virtue of the run rule.

Notre Dame improved its record to 10-0 as Mika Williamson pitched a four-inning no-hitter, even though she walked six and hit two batters. Williamson struck out six.

Notre Dame banged out 14 hits, led by Stacy Schwartz as she went 4-for-4. Sara Berkbigler had three hits and Laura Weissmueller added two.

"The girls are doing a super job and it's great to be 10-0," said Notre Dame coach Chris Janet. "We're playing really well."

But Janet knows the Lady Bulldogs will have their work cut out for them if they want to continue their undefeated ways past this week.

Not only do the Lady Bulldogs have games Wednesday and Thursday, they'll compete Saturday in the rugged Jackson Invitational that features some of the state's top squads.

"This is going to be a really tough week," Janet said. "The Jackson Tournament will be incredibly tough."

The Lady Bulldogs' junior varsity is also still perfect at 7-0 after a 12-1 run-rule win in five innings. Robin Beel hurled a two-hitter.

KELLY 11, DELTA 0

DELTA, Mo. -- Bridgett Riley fired a five-inning no-hitter and struck out 12 as undefeated Kelly rolled past Delta in a run-rule contest. Riley walked three.

"Bridgett really pitched a good game," said Kelly coach Melanie Heuring.

Kelly, which improved to 4-0, had seven hits and took advantage of several Delta errors. The Lady Hawks scored eight runs in the top of the first inning to break things open.

Rebecca Cook allowed just three earned runs but suffered the loss for Delta (3-3).

PERRYVILLE 15, CRYSTAL CITY 8

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- Perryville banged out 14 hits and won a wild game despite committing five errors.

Amber Leible and Julia Heuring both had three hits for the Lady Pirates (5-6). Leible drove in four runs. Amy Steffens and Sara Lappe each added two hits, with Lappe delivering two RBIs.

Lappe pitching 5 1/3 innings for the win. She allowed nine hits and eight runs, only three of them earned, with six strikeouts and two walks. Amanda Roth gave up one hit and no runs in 1 2/3 innings.

VOLLEYBALL

NOTRE DAME 15-15, SCOTT CITY 8-12

SCOTT CITY, Mo. -- Notre Dame, fresh off an impressive second-place finish in the SEMO Specialties & Sports High School Volleyball Classic over the weekend, earned a hard-fought win over an improved Scott City squad.

The Lady Bulldogs, now 9-1-1, got seven kills from Courtney Vickery while Deana McCormick and Jen VanGennip added five each. Ali Tyson dished out 32 assists and had four kills, Summer McCauley recorded 27 assists and Erin Pfau added three kills.

Scott City (5-6-1) received two kills each from Mindy Miller, Makenzie Cartwright, Sidney Baer and Amanda O'Brien.

Notre Dame made it a perfect night by winning the JV match 15-10, 15-10 and the freshmen contest 15-11, 15-8.

LEOPOLD 15-15, BERNIE 11-4

BERNIE, Mo. -- Leopold played one of its best matches of the season in rolling past Bernie and improving to 6-1-1.

Holly Jansen led the Lady Wildcats in kills with seven, followed by Courtney Wesbecher with six and Kyla Horrell with five. Lori Vandermierden had four kills and 16 digs while Wendy Vandeven recorded 20 assists.

Leopold won the JV match 15-8, 15-11.

EAGLE RIDGE PLACES SECOND

FESTUS, Mo. -- In action Saturday, Eagle Ridge Christian School placed second in the Christian Outreach Jamboree.

Eagle Ridge beat Southern Missouri Christian School 25-10, 25-12 and Twin Cities Christian School 25-17, 25-20 while losing to Christian Outreach 25-18, 25-23.

For Eagle Ridge (2-2), Brandy Shreve had 14 service points, followed by Rachel Carbaugh with 13 and Amber Karnes with 12.

GIRLS TENNIS

CAPE CENTRAL 7, KENNETT 2

KENNETT, Mo. -- Cape Central swept the three doubles matches as it picked up its first dual victory of the season.

The Lady Tigers are now 1-3. Cape Central won the JV match 15-0.

In varsity action over the weekend, Cape Central picked up a tournament win as it defeated Wentzville 7-2.

DEXTER, Mo. -- Jackson improved to 7-1 in duals by nabbing a thrilling victory over Dexter.

All nine matches -- six singles and three doubles -- went at least 13 games. And the win was not secured until Kari Miinch, Jackson's No. 6 singles player, defeated Amanda Ward 9-7 in the final match of the day.

"It was such a close match," said Jackson coach Linda Adams. "We were tied 4-4 and Kari was the last match on the courts. She pulled out the win and it was really exciting."

Jackson and Dexter tied in the JV contest 8-8.
