Notre Dame's golf team fell just short of capturing the Class 3 District 1 title Monday.

The Bulldogs fell to Farmington in a fifth player tie-breaker. Perryville finished 10th.

The Bulldogs did qualify as a team because four members finished in the top 15.

Senior Brett Slaten led the way, finishing in third place with a score of 78.

"This is Brett's fourth year to qualify for state, and each year he's gotten better," Notre Dame coach Jerry Grim said. "He puts a lot of work into it and he's done a great job for Notre Dame."

Freshman Jesse Schott finished fourth with a final tally of 79.

"He's our No. 2 man as a freshman," Grim said. "That is great. He is a strong kid and today that is what it took."

Senior Joe Wiggans claimed 12th place with a round of 88.

"This is Joe's first time making it to state," Grim said. "I couldn't be happier for him."

Rounding out the scoring for the Bulldogs was sophomore Kurt Heischmidt, who finished 13th with a score of 89.

"Kurt was like our seventh man last year," Grim said. "He has really come on this year. ... He is always right up there with the low scorers."
