JACKSON -- Notre Dame High's Bulldogs secured their third trip as a team to the Missouri Class 2A Golf Championships with a runner-up finish in Monday's District 1 Tournament at Bent Creek Golf Course.
Notre Dame, powered by a second-place finish by sophomore Tim Buerck in individual play, finished with a 351 total, two strokes behind district champion Caruthersville (349).
The Bulldogs finished four strokes ahead of Arcadia Valley (355), while Doniphan, Clearwater, Kennett and Malden followed. Only the top two teams advance to next week's state meet at Sedalia Country Club.
"We thought we had a chance to win it," said Notre Dame coach Chris Janet. "Caruthersville didn't have anyone in the top five, but had four guys in the 80's."
Bryan Shumate of Kennett was the medalist with a 5-over-par 77.
Buerck was next in line with a 78. His teammate Nick Martin was fourth individually with an 80 while Lucas Klein (96) and Derek Welter (97) rounded out the Bulldog team score.
"It gives us the opportunity to possibly make some noise (at state)," said Janet. "Those top three or four teams were pretty even. We knew it could go any way. We're real excited to get the opportunity."
Notre Dame, which qualified two individuals to last year's state meet, went to state as a team in 1997 and 1998.
