PACIFIC -- Notre Dame High's girls soccer team fell a bit short of winning the title in the Pacific Tournament as Union defeated the Lady Bulldogs 4-2 in Saturday night's championship game.
The Lady Bulldogs, who fell to 4-6, got goals from Emily Worley and Courtney Vickery. Worley and Katlyn Kelly had assists.
"It was a real good game," said Notre Dame coach Jeff Worley. "Union has a really nice team. The score doesn't indicate how close the game was.
"Even though we lost, I thought we had a very good tournament. The girls played well."
Worley and Cyndi Cox were named to the all-tourney squad.
Jackson 4, Francis Howell Central 2
JACKSON -- The Lady Indians had to battle the wind and a game Francis Howell squad to earn the victory.
Playing with the wind, Jackson (4-3-1) took a 2-0 lead at halftime, but Francis Howell scored two goals in the first two minutes of the second half to tie it up.
Ten minutes later, Jackson got another goal and with about four minutes left, the Lady Indians got an insurance goal.
Julie Wunderlich, Lacey Hodo, McKenzie Turley and Meghann Humphries each scored goals while Hodo had two assists and Wunderlich had one.
"We played really well and passed the ball well today," said Jackson coach Bonnie Knowlan. "We knew we had to keep it on the ground and we did. This was a good win against a good team today."
BASEBALL
Cape Central ties for third
SOUTH HAVEN, Miss. -- Cape Central enjoyed its most successful trip south when it tied for third in the 12-team DeSoto Times Classic Tournament.
After going 4-0 in pool play, Central saw host South Haven avenge a pool loss in the semifinal round with a 20-10, five-inning victory Saturday. The Tigers committed nine errors in the game that led to 17 unearned runs.
"We were playing pretty well up to that point," said Cape Central coach Steve Williams.
Cape Central, 8-4 overall, completed pool play with two victories earlier in the day. The Tigers defeated Horn Lake (Miss.) 7-4 and Olive Branch (Miss.) 19-5 in five innings.
Rob Carr had two doubles and two RBIs in the win over Horn Lake. The Tigers had just five hits overall.
Carr went the distance to notch the win, allowing eight hits, walking one and striking out one.
In the win over Olive Branch, Justin Welker belted a grand slam in a 13-run second inning and finished with five RBIs. Mark Fisher added a double and a triple and also collected five RBIs. Central had eight hits overall.
Richard Harrison recorded the win, giving up five hits, striking out five and walking three.
South Haven, ranked third in Mississippi, took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the second and broke the game open with 10 runs.
Joe Hamilton suffered the loss. Zach Fidler, Welker and Fisher all had three hits as Central had 11 overall. Fisher had four RBIs while Fidler, who had a pair of doubles, had three.
"The last game leaves a bad taste in your mouth, but we got better," said Williams. "The kids played hard. There was good competition and I think we got better from it."
Advance suffers first losses
MILLINGTON, Tenn. -- Advance suffered its first losses of the season as the Hornets went 0-3 over the weekend during the rugged Millington Invitational.
"Overall we came out winners. We learned a lot," said Advance coach Darrell Dannenmueller, whose team is 7-3. "I'm not down on the kids at all. These were some A-plus caliber teams we played."
Friday, Advance lost to Millington 5-4 and to Gallatin, Tenn., 8-5. Saturday, the Hornets fell to Lone Oak, Ky., 5-1.
Against Millington, Garrett Broshuis suffered the loss. He allowed two hits and two earned runs while striking out eight and walking three.
Against Gallatin, Aaron Cantrell gave up 10 hits and six earned runs. Adam Rainey had two hits for the Hornets.
In the loss to Lone Oak, D.A. Slinkard allowed three hits and two earned runs. He fanned six and walked two. Rainey again had two hits.
Kelly second in tourney
ANNA, Ill. -- Kelly finished second to the strong host squad during the four-team Anna-Jonesboro Quad State Tournament.
The Hawks (4-5) defeated Reidland, Ky., 10-3 before falling to A-J 11-1 in the finals. A-J improved to 10-1.
Against Reidland, John Heuring had three of Kelly's seven hits. Brad Kolwyck and Tyler Schlosser both drove in two runs.
Justin Simpher pitched all seven innings, allowing six hits while fanning seven and walking six.
Kelly had just two hits against A-J. Jamie Essner allowed seven hits and five earned runs in four innings for the loss.
"Anna-Jonesboro has an outstanding team," said Kelly coach Mike Scott.

Notre Dame loses three
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Notre Dame's girls junior varsity soccer team had a rough day, losing all three games it played and not scoring a goal in the Carbondale Tournament.
The Lady Bulldogs fell 1-0 to Belleville (Ill.), 3-0 to Jackson and 2-0 to Carbondale to fall to 1-5-1 on the season.
Notre Dame's Abby Fuller and Alicia Sachse were named to the all-tournament team.
