FARMINGTON, Mo. -- Notre Dame's girls basketball team held Fort Zumwalt South to just two first-quarter points but could not keep up the defensive pressure and fell 43-38 Wednesday at the Farmington Tournament.

The third-seeded Bulldogs (0-1) forced Fort Zumwalt into some early turnovers and had a 12-2 lead after the first quarter. Notre Dame led by only a point, 19-18, by halftime.

"Our press worked on them for a while and we got some turnovers; we just quit working it," Notre Dame coach Jerry Grim said.

Notre Dame still led 27-24 after the third quarter but was outscored 19-11 in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs were plagued by poor free-throw shooting, going 10-for-22 from the line.

Notre Dame got 37 of its 38 points from its three primary returning players. Sierra Ellis led Notre Dame with 15 points but fouled out. Sommer McCauley added 12 points and Sarah Palmer had 10.

Notre Dame will face Central in the consolation bracket today at 6:30 p.m.

St. Vincent fell to 0-3 with a 50-29 loss to Valle. Sierra Paulus led the Squaws with 11 points. St. Vincent only managed 10 points in one of four quarters.

Jackson lost its season opener at the Farmington Tournament late Tuesday night.

Tyler McNeely scored 19 points to lead the Indians and Jack Puisis added 11. Farmington's Ben Arand had 17.

The Indians continue tournament play at 8 p.m. tonight against Eureka.

Other events

Notre Dame's girls freshman team beat Central 32-18. Notre Dame (1-1) had nine players score led by Courtney Ostendorf's six points.
