Notre Dame claims district tennis crown

The Notre Dame boys tennis team made school history Wednesday.

Notre Dame, in just its second season to field a boys tennis squad, won its first district title.

The Bulldogs avenged two regular-season losses to Dexter by beating the host Bulldogs 5-2 for the Class 1 District 1 crown.

Notre Dame dropped the first two singles matches but won the next four, getting straight-set victories from Webb Marshall, Bryan Reeves, Ethan Derrington and Zach Anderson.

A straight-sets win by the No. 2 doubles team of Anderson and Mason Seesing clinched the district title.

The Bulldogs advance to the team sectional competition May 18 at a site to be determined.

Notre Dame will compete Saturday in the class 1 District 1 individual tournament in Potosi.

BASEBALL

Central 6, Charleston 0

Longtime Central coach Steve Williams' final regular-season home game with the Tigers was a memorable one.

The Tigers came within one out of a combined no-hitter in beating Charleston 6-0 Thursday as Central improved to 10-19.

Central's seniors were honored prior to the Senior Day contest, then Williams was also honored for his 22-year run in charge of Central's program that featured winning the 1994 state title at his alma mater.

Cape Girardeau Mayor Harry Rediger was part of Thursday's pre-game ceremony as he declared it "Steve Williams Day."

"It was really nice," said Williams, who is retiring from Central following this season.

Charleston broke up the no-hit bid with a two-out single in the seventh inning.

Sean Magee was the winning pitcher, striking out five in four innings.

Trevor Propst worked the fifth inning and Chase Eubank finished, striking out four over the final two innings.

Tyler Anderson had the game's big blow, a three-run fifth-inning double.

Central begins Class 5 District 1 play at 4:30 p.m. Friday against Farmington at Hillsboro.

Ryan O'Rear had three hits while Jordan Hadden belted a triple among his two hits to lead the Indians to victory at Whitey Herzog Stadium in their last game of the regular season.

Avery Whiteside picked up his fourth win on the mound. He pitched three innings and gave up one earned run on two hits with three strikeouts and three walks for Jackson (19-6).

Jackson returns to the field Saturday in the Class 5 District 1 Tournament at Hillsboro. The Indians, seeded second, will play the winner of No. 3 Poplar Bluff (15-5) and No. 6 Hillsboro (5-11).

Jerad Yates suffered the loss for the Cubs. He went the distance and had two strikeouts and two walks.

Nolan Schaefer hit a double to pace Bell City (7-12).

Logan Misner suffered the loss on the mound. He pitched 3 2/3 innings and gave up six earned runs on seven hits with one strikeout and one walk for Poplar Bluff (15-5).

Wesley Pyles belted a triple to pace the Mules.

Shelby Beussink and Taylor Rinda scored a goal apiece as the Bulldogs picked up the road win to wrap up the regular season.

Annie Siebert provided one assist for Notre Dame (11-8).

Goalkeeper Madison Buelow had the shutout.

The Bulldogs, seeded second, begin district play at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Class 2 District 1 Tournament at Central against No. 3 Perryville.
