BENTON -- Notre Dame High's baseball team pounded Kelly, which finished third in Class 2A last season, 13-3 on the road on Monday.

Notre Dame led 11-0 in the fifth inning before Kelly scored twice in the bottom of the frame.

Ryan LeGrand earned the complete game victory. He allowed eight hits while striking out five and walking three.

The Bulldogs pounded 14 hits. Scott Reinagel and Nathan Essner each went 3-for-4, Wes Steele was 2-for-5 and LeGrand went 2-for-4.

Kelly's Jason Glastetter allowed six earned runs in four innings and took the loss.

Denver Stuckey, John Livingston and Jess Pattengill each had two hits.

"Notre Dame is an outstanding team," said Kelly coach Mike Scott. "They hit the ball well today."

Jackson 5, Charleston 3

CHARLESTON -- Jackson scored single runs in the first, second, third, fifth and sixth innings in its win over Charleston on Monday.

Jackson's Chris Kohm earned the win. He allowed two earned runs on four hits in five innings while striking out five and walking two. Paul Johns got the save.

The Indians totaled seven hits. Travis Stevens went 3-for-4 and Todd Wessel was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

"We didn't hit the ball very well," said Jackson coach Sam Sides of the Indians' effort against three young Charleston pitchers.

Scott City 17, New Madrid 1

SCOTT CITY -- Scott City used a 10-run fourth inning in its season opener Monday to deliver a knockout punch to New Madrid as the Rams won in five innings.

Scott City (1-0) banged out 12 hits, including two apiece by Tim Lowry, John Wipfler, Terry Enderle, Scott Johnston and Travis Burger. Wipfler and Burger each finished with three RBIs. All three of Burger's came on a bases-loaded triple.

Lowery picked up the win on the mound, allowing four hits, striking out four and walking four.

Golf

Central wins triangular meet

JACKSON -- Behind a 1-under-par 35 from senior Dane McLaird, Cape Central easily bettered Notre Dame and Jackson at Bent Creek Golf Course on Monday.

The Tigers shot 163, Notre Dame 181 and Jackson 189.

Also for Central, Bryan Welker shot 41, Kent Phillips 43 and Dan Groesbeck 44.

For Notre Dame, John Brey shot 43, Jonathan LeGrand 44, Nick Martin 45 and Jordan Tatum 49.

Gabe Estes' 39 paced Jackson. Tom Henderson shot 49, Andy Kohl 50 and Craig Hutson 51.

Girls soccer

Perryville 2, Notre Dame 0

PERRYVILLE -- Notre Dame fell to 1-2-1 with its loss at Perryville on Monday.

Perryville scored midway through the second half after a corner kick and added the other with about 10 minutes to go.

Notre Dame's JV won 2-0. Nicole Passini and Kim Crader each scored goals.

Softball

Kelly 8, Notre Dame 2

BENTON -- Kelly collected eight of its 11 hits in a six-runs second inning in a victory over Notre Dame.

After Kelly scored a run in the bottom of the first and Notre Dame tied it in the second, the Lady Hawks broke loose. Kelly led 7-1 after the second and both teams scored single runs in the fourth.

Jill Huber suffered the loss for Notre Dame (1-1). She struck out three and walked nobody. Brittney Lambert picked up the win, allowing six hits. She struck out six and didn't walk a batter.

Suzanne Schwartz and Shanna Kelly both went 2 for 3 for Notre Dame. Schwartz also had two RBIs.

Chaffee 11, Meadow Heights 1

CHAFFEE -- In its season opener, Chaffee hammered Meadow Heights in a game shortened after five innings on Monday.

Amy Burnett earned the win. She went five innings, allowing one earned run on three hits while striking out seven and walking two.

Chaffee totaled 10 hits. Burnett went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, Jamie Duncan was 3-for-3 and Jody Pfefferkorn had a two-run homer.

Scott City 15, St. Vincent 5

PERRYVILLE -- Scott City had 15 hits in its easy win at St. Vincent on Monday. It was Scott City's season opener.

Scott City's Amy O'Brien, Jessica Dees and Becca Edmondson each had three hits and Dana Adams added two.

O'Brien was the winning pitcher. She allowed two runs on two hits in four innings of work and struck out nine.

St. Vincent's Missy Thomas took the loss.

Girls swimming

Cape Central 140, Oakville 46

Central won every race and dominated visiting Oakville on Monday.

Three Central swimmers recorded state meet qualifying times: Grace Freeman (200 and 500 freestyle), Jean Maguire (50 freestyle) Mary Beth Owen (100 breaststroke).

Central improved to 3-1.
