Central's girls basketball team couldn't defend its home court Saturday and lost 49-35 to Nerinx Hall of St. Louis.
It was the final stage of a two-day trip to Southeast Missouri for Nerinx Hall, which beat the area's top-ranked team, Jackson, on Friday night.
Nerinx Hall used a man-to-man defense to post a strong first quarter, jumping ahead by eight. The Tigers (11-7) turned things around in the second, holding Nerinx Hall to two points and netting 10 of their own.
The squads were tied at the break, but Nerinx Hall (13-9) put an end to the suspense early in the third by doubling the Tigers' third-quarter score to go ahead by seven. The lead expanded from there.
The Tigers were led by Alex Wieser's 10 points.
Perryville 57, St. Vincent 34
Perryville outscored St. Vincent by 26 in the second half to win 57-34.
The Pirates were down 26-21 at halftime but held St. Vincent (6-9) to just eight second half points.
April Lorenz led the Pirates with 22 and Emily Amberger added 11. Allison Prost led St. Vincent with 10.
BOYS BASKETBALL
St. Vincent 45, Perryville 43
St. Vincent outlasted city rival Perryville at the Perry Park Center.
The Indians (8-6) and Pirates went into halftime tied at 26. St. Vincent outscored the Pirates (5-14) by four in the third quarter and held off a fourth-quarter Perryville charge.
Matt Wengert led St. Vincent with 15 points and Aaron Rellergert had 12. Tim Winningham led the Pirates with 15 points.
BOYS SWIMMING
Central places ninth
Central finished ninth out of 16 teams at the Springfield (Mo.) Invitational.
David Hammond led with a third-place finish in the diving competition with 318 points. Sam Maguire finished sixth in the 100 free (52.36) and 11th in the 200 free (2:00.70), Kris Metje took 11th in the 500 free (5:40.67) and Alex Heddle finished eighth in the 50 free (23.99) to round out Central's top individual finishes.
The relay team of Maguire, Heddle, Andrew Moreton and Clay Schermann took ninth in the medley relay and sixth in the 200 free relay in times of 1:52.15 and 1:37.58, respectively. Quentin Kelly, Jacob White, Daniel Austin and Metje made up the 400 free relay team that finished 10th in 4:05.50.
OTHER EVENTS
The Jackson junior varsity boys basketball won the Malden Tournament with a 38-25 win over Kennett. Tyler Beussink led the Indians with 10 points.
Saxony Lutheran (18-4)ended its regular season at home with a 48-14 victory over St. Charles Lutheran. Saxony led 28-2 at halftime. Tim Lorenz led with 15 points. Casey Petzholdt had10 points and 10 rebounds and Trey Mayvers had 10 points and nine assists.
Jackson won the SEMO Conference JV tournament Saturday at Jackson. Jackson placed all of its wrestlers in the top three. The Indians took home seven individual wins. They were: Michael Rush (2-0), Cameron Heath (3-0), Drew Perry (4-0), Austin Bock (4-0), Drew Lowes (5-0), Andy Glass (4-0) and Cole Jansen (4-0).
Central finished seventh and had away three medalists. Joey Hodge took top honors at 119 pounds to win the conference championship. Other medalists were Russel Smith (160 pounds) in third and Clayton Hill (140) in fourth.
Jackson's ninth-grade boys basketball team won its own tournament with a win over Central 72-62. Jared Thomas led the way for the Tigers with 27 points.
