ST. LOUIS -- Notre Dame picked up possibly the biggest win in the history of its soccer program with a 1-0 victory over nemesis St. Mary's Saturday at the Anheuser-Busch Conference & Sports Center.
Tyler Cuba, who learned of his grandmother's death shortly before the start of the game, scored the night's only goal when he scored with two minutes left in the first half.
St. Mary's, the No. 1 ranked small school in St. Louis, has been a perennial thorn in the side of Notre Dame, ending the Bulldogs' season the last three years in the 1A-3A sectional round.
"This one was real sweet," said Notre Dame coach Brad Wittenborn, whose Bulldogs had never beaten St. Mary's. "You wouldn't believe the intensity of the game."
Cuba stole the ball deep in the Dragons' end and slipped the ball past the goaltender, who came out on the play.
"He was having a hard time keeping his focus," said Wittenborn, who said Cuba's grandmother passed away about a half-hour before the start of the game. "It was a tough night for him."
"The kids played with a great deal of heart," said Wittenborn. "It was by far the best they've played all year."
In JV action, Notre Dame battled St. Mary's to a 1-1 tie. Elliott Vance scored the Bulldog goal.

ST. VINCENT 18, LUTHERAN SOUTH 7
ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- St. Vincent played keep away in the second half Saturday as it knocked off Lutheran South.
Trailing at halftime 7-6, the Indians mounted time-consuming drives to ultimately improve to 2-1.
After the Lancers took a 7-0 lead on a 14-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter, St. Vincent shut them out the rest of the game.
With 3:41 left in the first half, Adam Bockman put the Indians on the scoreboard when he ran it in from nine yards out. Bockman had 106 yards on 18 carries. St. Vincent missed the extra-point attempt and later missed two 2-point conversions.
Bockman scored the second of his three touchdowns with 6:43 to go in the third quarter, finding the end zone from eight yards out.
With 11:41 left, Tyler Paulus connected with Bockman for a 41-yard touchdown strike.
"In the second half, we played well," St. Vincent coach Keith Winkler said. "But to tell you the truth, I don't think we came ready to play. We got fired up and in the second half, the offensive line opened some holes, we got some nice drives and shut them down."
After allowing about 225 yards in the first half, the Indians allowed only 45 yards in the second half, mainly because they possessed the ball so long on their drives.
Paulus completed three of his five passes for 65 yards. Chris Meyr carried the ball 14 times for 75 yards and led the team with nine solo tackles and nine assists. Dane Balsman and Adam Prost both intercepted passes, while Nathan Rosenquist recovered a fumble.
