Led by senior Sommer McCauley's 18 points and five rebounds, the Notre Dame Bulldogs defeated Sparta 55-38 to take third place in the HealthSouth Holiday Classic.

The Lady Bulldogs put the pressure on Sparta early by forcing several errant passes and costly turnovers. Bad ball-handling by Sparta helped Notre Dame get easy baskets early.

Racing out to an early 7-0 advantage, Notre Dame (6-3) stayed in control and never trailed.

Sparta closed the gap to 34-31 early in the third quarter after a 10-2 run, but Notre Dame held off Sparta's surge. They capped the win by scoring the final 14 points.

The Bulldogs of Sparta got 12 points from senior guard Rachel Rednour, who fouled out midway through the fourth quarter.

"I think we played pretty good," McCauley said. "We came out with more intensity than them."

Notre Dame got strong contributions from seniors Sierra Ellis and Katie Palmer. Ellis had 11 points and pulled down four rebounds. Palmer added 10 points to go along with five rebounds.
