Notre Dame High's girls soccer team picked up a thrilling 1-0 victory over visiting Poplar Bluff Tuesday in a game that was decided by penalty kicks.
The squads failed to score through regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods. The Lady Bulldogs then converted four of their five penalty kicks while the Lady Mules managed just three of five.
"It was a very even game," said Notre Dame coach Jeff Worley, whose squad is 5-5-1. "Both teams had good chances to score. It was up and down the field the whole time. Both teams missed on some good opportunities.
Jill Edwards, Jennifer Glueck, Christine Kimball and Beth Essner all converted penalty kicks for Notre Dame, with Essner's the game-winner.
"Our goalie, Shannel Bueltemann, made two big saves in the penalty kicks and she had another diving save about 15 minutes before the end of regulation," Worley said.
