Notre Dame's boys basketball team advanced to the championship game of the Farmington Tournament by beating Eureka 57-42 Friday night for its second round-robin win of the tournament.
The Bulldogs (2-0) will play Poplar Bluff at 7:30 p.m. today for the title.
Notre Dame took a 17-10 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. The Bulldogs led 25-16 at halftime and took a 45-32 lead into the fourth quarter.
Wayne Essner scored a game-high 21 points for the Bulldogs and Bryce Willen added 13.
Tim Clubb, with 12 points, was the only Eureka player in double figures.
Late Thursday, the Bulldogs opened their season and the tournament by rolling past Farmington 71-45 behind a 43-13 rebounding edge.
Travis Siebert had 19 points, Willen 17, Corey Beussink 16 and Essner 10 for the Bulldogs.
Central 57, Riverview Gardens 56
The Central Tigers picked up their first win in thrilling fashion when Ryan Delph's basket with less than 10 seconds left provided a one-point Farmington Tournament consolation victory over Riverview Gardens.
Central (1-1) led throughout the first half, but found itself up only four at halftime. Riverview came out strong in the second half, outscoring the Tigers 19-12 in the third quarter.
Central coach Derek McCord said his defense was the key to getting the Tigers back the lead late in the game.
"They went up and we went to full court man-to-man," he said.
With Willie Colon and Scott Chestnutt causing Riverview to turn the ball over time and again late, Central was able to hold on for the close win.
Central had several chances to put Riverview away, leading by as many as six points in the fourth quarter, but poor free-throw shooting let Riverview back into the game late.
Delph led the Tigers with 24 points. Jake Knepp had a big day on the glass, collecting nine rebounds to go along with eight points. Chestnutt added 15 points and seven rebounds.
The Tigers will play Farmington at 1:30 p.m. today in the consolation final.
Poplar Bluff 56, Jackson 41
After a strong first half the Indians hit rock-bottom in the third quarter and fell to Poplar Bluff in a Farmington Tournament semifinal game.
Jackson led 28-26 at halftime, but after being outscored 17-4 in the third quarter the Indians simply could not come back. Jackson scored only 13 points the entire second half.
Tyler McNeely led Jackson (1-1) with 15 points before fouling out. Jeff Beck added 10 points for the Indians, and Nick Fieler had eight points. Tyler Hansbrough had a game-high 19 points for Poplar Bluff (2-0).
Jackson will play Eureka in the third-place game at 4:30 today.
Oran Tournament
Host Oran needed overtime to upset Bell City 63-62 to reach today's final.
Patrick Friga led third-seeded Oran with 23 points and Nathan Seyer added 21 points. Second-seeded Bell City, the defending Class 1 state champion, got 22 points from Dominitrix Johnson and 16 from Eric Henry.
In the other semifinal, top-seeded Twin Rivers downed No. 4 Kelly 59-42 behind 18 points from Robby Moore and 14 from Matt Stanford. Kelly got 22 points from Major Burger.
Gideon beat Richland in the consolation bracket 79-38.
Today, Gideon takes on Scott County Central at 1 p.m. in the consolation final, Kelly faces Bell City at 2:30 in the third-place game and Oran battles Twin Rivers in the championship game at 4.
Woodland Tournament
Top-seeded Advance survived overtime with Bloomfield to reach tonight's championship game where it will play second-seeded Woodland at 7 p.m.
Advance, which lost a nine-point fourth-quarter lead, squeaked by with a 71-69 win over fifth-seeded Bloomfield.
Jared Ritter scored a game-high 34 points for Advance (2-0), which also received 15 points from Zach Hudson and 11 from Zack Kelley.
Grant Jones paced Bloomfield with 14 points.
Advance led throughout, holding a 33-25 lead at halftime and a 46-37 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. Bloomfield rallied with a 24-point fourth quarter to send the game into overtime tied 61-61.
Woodland (2-1) had an easier route with a 64-39 semifinal win over third-seeded Leopold. The Cardinals built a 26-19 lead by halftime and took a comfortable 43-30 lead into the fourth quarter.
Luke Johnson, 17 points, led four Cardinals in double figures. Travis Benfield added 16 points, Alex VanGennip had 12 and Chad Hulvey 10.
In consolation play, Zalma defeated Delta 71-50. Chad Wiseman scored 17 points to lead Zalma. Joey Keys netted a game-high 19 for Delta.
Eagle Ridge wins two
Eagle Ridge Christian School picked up its first two wins of the season, sweeping its two opening-round games in the Christian Outreach School/Jefferson College Tounament in Hillsboro, Mo.
The Eagles (2-1) defeated host Christian Outreach 47-30 in their first game, and then slipped past Collinsville (Ill.) Christian School 29-24.
Andrew Mellies led the Eagles in each game, scoring 22 against Christian Outreach and 19 against Collinsville. Mellies had 42 rebounds in the two games.
New Salem loses two
New Salem Baptist dropped two games at the Christian Outreach School/Jefferson College Tournament in Hillsboro, Mo.
New Salem (6-4) lost the first game 47-31 to Warrenton, and followed that with a 44-42 loss to Christian High School of St. Charles. Johnathan Davault had 26 points combined in the two games to lead the way for New Salem Baptist.
Girls' basketball
JACKSON 42, NOTRE DAME 37
Jackson used a strong performance from Whitney Werner to move on to the final of the Farmington Tournament.
Jackson (2-0) led throughout the game, taking a three point lead into halftime. Jenna Leet had 14 points for Jackson to go along with Werner's 19.
For Notre Dame (1-1), Ashley Millham led the way with 15 points. Ali Tyson added eight points.
Jackson will play in the championship game at 6 p.m. against St. Joseph's Academy. Notre Dame plays Central for the consolation at noon.
Eagle Ridge prevails
Eagle Ridge Christian School edged Southern Missouri Christian School 20-19 in its opening-round game of the Christian Outreach School/Jefferson College Tournament in Hillsboro, Mo.
Autumn Crowden and Rachel Carbaugh each had six points to lead the Eagles (2-0). Rachel Huevel grabbed nine rebounds, and Cara Ervin had five points, four rebounds and three steals.
Boys' swimming
PARKWAY SOUTH 132, CENTRAL 56
Central struggled to only one victory against visiting Parkway South to fall to 0-3 in dual meets.
Alex Heddle picked up the Tigers' lone first-place finish in the 50-meter freestyle. Heddle's time of 24:22 was good enough to slip by teammate Sam Maguire, who finished second in 22:31.
Central also picked up second-place finishes in the medley relay, one-meter diving, 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay. Andrew Moreton, Maguire and Heddle were members of all three relay teams.
Clay Schermann rounded out the medley relay that finished with a time of 1:58:18. Kris Metje rounded out the 200 and 400 free relay teams that finished in times of 1:41:59 and 3:51:59, respectively. David Hammond took second in diving with a score of 171.65.
Other top performances for Central were Moreton's third-place in the 100 freestyle and Quentin Kelly's third-place finish in the 500 freestyle.
