CAPE GIRARDEAU — The Poplar Bluff Mules boys tennis team had a day to remember Thursday at the SEMO Conference Tournament.

The Mules dominated on the singles side, holding down the top two spots and facing each other in the championship match. In that match, Angelo Sorrentino defeated teammate Alejandro Rivetti in the all-Poplar Bluff final.

In doubles play, Tavian Towns and Carson Todd won their opening match before falling in the quarterfinals, while Matthew Penn and Isaac Cato dropped their first-round match.

“Our two really strong doubles teams were broken up because our top two players wanted to play singles, but we had a fairly successful doubles team that won the first game and had to go up against one of the top seeds in the second round,” Sowatzke said. “The guys are real excited to play tennis this year, so we should stay competitive throughout the season.

“We’ve seen some district competition now, so it was good that the guys lost to some district opponents. Now they can re-double their efforts and focus on improving little parts of their game.”

The Mules are back in action Tuesday at home against Jackson.
