Survive and advance was the gameplan for the Poplar Bluff Mules basketball team as they traveled north for the Rolla “Duke” Herbert Classic at Crystal City High School.

The Mules picked up their first win of the season with a 78-63 win over the St. Louis Patriots on Tuesday.

Poplar Bluff led 15-9 after the first quarter and kept building on its lead throughout the game.

Sophomore guard Brendan Durden had a hot night by leading the Mules with 19 points, while senior Mar’Lon Hickman Roberson added with 17 points. Preston Moore chipped in with 13 points while Torrence Williams and Dallas Williams both had eight.

The Mules improve to 1-1 on the season and will play the winner of St. Vincent and Herculaneum High School on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
