Saxony Lutheran had its first home game of the season spoiled after falling to Notre Dame 5-1 on Tuesday at Saxony Lutheran High School.
It the Bulldogs two shots to build a 2-0 lead. Bryce Sides scored multiple goals, leading Notre Dame to its second straight win.
"We played really well today as a team, kept the ball and possessed it, and we played some great through balls," Sides said. "We were able to hit and connect with them and it was great."
With the win, the Bulldogs (4-3) improved to above .500 for the first time since defeating Carbondale 1-0 on Aug. 29 to be 2-1.
"We started off rough at the beginning of the year but we're cleaning up, practicing real hard, working really hard to become a good team," Sides said.
The Bulldogs travel to Farmington on Thursday while Saxony Lutheran (5-3) travel to take on St. Pius X.
"We're improving very fast," Sides said. "I see bright things for the future."
__SOFTBALL: Perryville blows doors off Herculaneum__
Perryville softball (2-9) hosted Herculaneum (1-6) on Tuesday and took a routing win, defeating the Blackcats 20-4 on the backs of a powerful offensive performance.
Kylee Stortz led the Pirates offensively, driving in six runs including a second-inning grand slam to unload the bases and eventually complete a 10-run frame to truly establish the team’s offensive onslaught.
Jenna Brewer led Perryville in hits, finishing with a three-knock night while driving in a run, while Caroline Gremaud’s two-hit, two-walk, four-run night led all Pirates in production.
Perryville next hosts Jefferson (2-3), playing at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday in Perryville, Mo.
__Chaffee 11, Twin Rivers 0__
Chaffee (9-3) rebounded from a tough loss the day before, dominating Twin Rivers (3-3) in an 11-0 rout at home.
The Red Devils scored four in the first and six in the third, creating big numbers right off the bat to truly direct the game flow. Out-hitting the Royals at 12-1, while Twin Rivers created five errors to just two for Chaffee, the hosts dominated the basepath en route to a big win.
Carlyanne Cossou finished with two hits and two runs at shortstop, with Reese Van Pelt, Paige Wilhite, and Addison Urhahn all finishing with two hits as well. Freshman Paizleigh Graham’s three-run double pushed her to a team lead in RBIs for the game.
Freshman pitcher Bailey Robertson finished with the win for the Red Devils, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing just one hit and one walk, striking out six.
Anne Mittelstadt notched the lone hit of the game for Twin Rivers, with Abigail Suiter drawing the lone walk of the game for the Royals.
Chaffee next plays at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday at St. Pius X in Festus, Mo., while Twin Rivers picks up to play at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday at Neelyville (4-3).
__GIRLS TENNIS: Saxony Lutheran rebounds in home rout of Dexter__
Saxony Lutheran (10-2) bounced back from a Monday loss with a big 7-2 victory against Dexter (4-7) at Southeast Missouri State University on Tuesday, winning all but one on both the singles and doubles courts.
Maggie Hillin, Abby Haley, Evie Caruso, Addie Thomason, and Katya Rust all took wins on the singles courts for the Crusaders, while the pairings of Hillin/Haley and Caruso/Thomason took doubles victories to secure the 7-2 result.
Dexter’s Kinley Kennedy took an 8-5 singles victory for the Bearcats as well as a doubles win along with partner Puja Maisuria.
Saxony Lutheran next hosts Jackson (7-7-1) at 4 p.m. on Thursday at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Mo., while Dexter moves to host Arcadia Valley (3-5) at 4 p.m. on Thursday in Dexter, Mo.
__VOLLEYBALL: Bernie pounces, downing Scott City on the road__
Bernie (8-4-1) took a dominant road victory on Tuesday night, traveling to Scott City (4-4-2) to take a 3-1 victory (25-18, 25-18, 21-25, 25-14) after dropping just the third set.
Scott City battled but couldn’t quite figure out the Mules as Bernie took a lopsided victory to continue its hot start to the season.
The Rams’ Alyssa Dirden once again led the offensive attack with 17 kills, Maggie Jones (10) and Makenna Gentry (8) following close behind. Ramsey Spinks continues to produce eye-popping numbers, contributing 41 assists on the night.
Defensively, Spinks’ 14 digs led the Rams with Dirden’s 10 and Gentry’s seven pacing the junior playmaker.
Scott City next hosts Cape Central (5-5-1), playing at 6:30 p.m. on Monday in Scott City, Mo., while Bernie next hosts Dexter at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday in Bernie, Mo.
