CHAFFEE -- Chaffee High's football team ran into a rugged Malden squad Friday night and the Red Devils suffered a 38-0 home loss in their season opener.
Malden made the Class 2A playoffs last season while Chaffee suffered through an 0-9 campaign.
"It was a tough way to start the season against a really good team," said Chaffee coach Brian Horrell. "Malden has all their linemen back and their all-state quarterback (Josh Blaylock). They've got the stables full again it looks like. They look very strong to me."
Horrell said he was pleased with the Red Devils' defense, particularly in the early going, but the defenders simply got worn down.
"In the first quarter we came out and played with a lot of emotion," he said. "The defense played well the first quarter. But they were just out there too long. Being ineffective on offense took its toll."
Malden led 25-0 at halftime and coasted in the second half.
"Offensively we were very infective," Horrell. "We lost one of our linemen on the second play of game and had to piece some things together."
Chaffee will play at Gosnell, Ark., next Friday night.
