MALDEN, Mo. - Hometown fans here Saturday were not disappointed with the Lady Green Wave's performance on the diamond.
The Malden team squeaked past the Senath-Hornersville Lady Lions 5-4.
Although the Lady Green Wave was scoreless in the top of the first and Lady Lion Kaya Horton earned an RBI knocking in Emma Sample, the Malden team went ahead in the second 2-1 on two passed balls, the first to courtesy runner for pitcher Alyssa Broom, Kenzie Wynn and the second to Kaitlynn Sparks.
Broom knocked out the Lady Lions 1-2-3.
Both teams went down swinging until the top of the fourth inning when Sparks walked and Allison Perry doubled on a fireball to left, which brought home Sparks, 3-1 Malden.
That score was active until the top of the fifth when Carsyn Cohen swatted a missile of a ball into right and tripled. Cohen remained on third until a wild pitch allowed her to steal home and Malden stretched its lead 4-1.
Fast forward to the top of the seventh inning and its darn near a repeat of the fifth. Cohen scored on another passed ball, 5-1 Malden, and Sparks popped out to first to close out the inning.
Bottom of the seventh inning and the Lady Lions refused to crater. Burlison reached on a pop to center and Sample doubled on a line drive to left field scoring Burlison, 5-2 Malden.
Malden's shortstop M Loya put on a defensive display when Perry all but knocked the cover off the ball. Loya had enough time to take one step before she reached out an snagged a heat-seeker, sentenced the Lady Lions to an out and pasted two runners to their respective bases.
Senath's R White stepped into the box with two outs, doubled and batted in Sample and Walker to lift the score to 5-4 Malden.
The Lady Lions popped out to Broom, and that was all she wrote, Malden 5, Senath 4.
Broom earned the win for Malden. She was in all seven innings, allowed four runs on seven hits, committed two errors, walked two and struck out six.
Lady Green Wave head coach Kyle Jones was pleased with the team's execution.
“They gave me a little bit of anxiety in that last inning,” Jones said. “But we played well today.
“We had great defense and solid pitching on our side,” he added. “We got the runs when we needed them.
“I'm very proud of our team.”
The Lady Green Wave (14-16) welcome the Kennett Lady Indians (21-8) to the home field at 4 p.m. Monday.
