Cape Girardeau Central High boys tennis coach Bud Craven knew his team would be facing a major challenge Thursday when Kentucky powerhouse Lone Oak came to town.

Craven was right on the money because the Tigers suffered a 9-0 loss, although Central did win the junior varsity match 8-3.

"Lone Oak is very good," said Craven, whose squad fell to 1-1 in dual matches. "But our young players (on the JV) show a lot of promise for the future."

Central travels to St. Louis to face Mehlville today.

ADVANCE -- Advance, expected to be among the top small-school teams in Southeast Missouri, opened its season with a victory Thursday.

The game was called after six innings because of darkness.

Garrett Broshuis was the winning pitcher, striking out 13, walking three and allowing just two hits. All five Bernie runs were unearned.

Advance banged out 14 hits, led by Daniel Turner, who was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and three stolen bases. Broshuis and Chris Wallace added two hits apiece. Broshuis scored three times and stole three bases.

BOYS GOLF

Perryville 175, Notre Dame 188

Notre Dame lost its second meet in as many days to open the season as Perryville prevailed Thursday at Bent Creek.

Perryville's Ryan Besand shot a 38 to earn medalist. Other scores for the Pirates were Jeff Hotop, 42; Andy Tanz, 45; and Derek Cattoor, 50.

Nick Martin paced Notre Dame with a 43. He was followed by Tim Buerck, 45; Jordan Tatum, 49; Lucas Klein, 51; and David Beussink, 51.

GIRLS SOCCER

Perryville 3, Marion 0

MARION, Ill -- Perryville's Britney Weibrecht scored a goal and had an assist as Perryville improved to 2-0 on the season Thursday.

Also scoring for Perryville were Amanda Schumer and Brooke Winkler. Cindy Rhyner added an assist.

Goalkeeper Jennifer Blevins recorded the shutout.

SOFTBALL

Advance 15, Bernie 5

ADVANCE -- The Lady Hornets spotted Bernie a 1-0 lead in Thursday's season opener, but remainder of the five-inning game belonged to Advance.

Pitcher Ashley Hitt scattered five hits and had two hits in Advance's 13-hit attack. Hitt struck out five and walked two.

Jennifer Phelps led the offense with three hits, including a double and a triple, and four RBIs. Amanda Bond, Hitt, Sheila Stubenrauch and Jessica Eftink all added two hits.

Advance scored three runs in the bottom of the first. After Bernie closed to 3-2 in the top of the second, the Lady Hornets scored the next 11 runs.
